Hey all, I'm getting a home theatre system with 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.
I'm wondering if this set up will work...
I want to run 1 hdmi from my PS3 output to the receiver's input
1 hdmi from my cable box output to the receiver's input
and 1 hdmi from the receiver's output to my TV's input
Will I get surround sound out of all my components set up this way or do I have to run optic cables and other **** ?
Your AV amp has 5.1 speaker connections (Front Left, Right and Center along with Rear Left and Right) correct? Then you should get "Surround" when the source is delivering a "Surround" signal provided you have the amp set for that output.
hey shorebird, yes I realize that. The reason I asked about the connections through the HDMI cables is because I had an amp with only one HDMI output therefore everything I connected through the TV then and optic cable from the tv to the amp then I had to run rga cables from the tv and the ps3 to the amp to be able to get sound out of them. The downfall to that is I lose true surround sound with rga cables ( yellow red and white )
I was wondering if by having an amp with 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output I would be able to avoid running rga cables and benefit having true surround with the hdmi cables.
HDMI, as a cable standard, carries an uncompressed digital bitstream audio signal. Whether or not your components output 5.1- or 7.1-channel surround sound over HDMI depends on the components. Most do, some don't.
Based on what you said you have, you should be able to hook the cable box and PS3 to the new receiver with HDMI cables, then an HDMI cable to the TV, and hook the speakers to the receiver and be good to go. That's pretty much how I have mine set up. I have the TV speakers turned off in the TV setup menu, and use the receiver to switch both audio and video sources. Mine's a little more complicated (add a Blu-ray, XBOX360 in place of the PS3, an old XBOX and a VCR), but I also have a receiver with 5 HDMI inputs and 2 HDMI outputs, along with 2 extra "zones"--meaning in addition to having the home theater setup, I can have 2 other pairs of speakers elsewhere in the house, and all 3 zones can have different audio sources (and video, too...).
tks jroehl. I like your set up. I picked up something similar today. Purchased a sony with 3 hdmi in and 1 out which also has the extra "zone"... Wireless to boot. Have to wait until tomorow though to pick up.
Jason has it correct. You may want to view your product's documentation to insure you buy 'enough' HDMI cable; that is, it is capable of the data rate of each of your components. This is most critical with Blu-Ray.
On edit: this doesn't mean you have to pay $100 for Monster cables; look at Wal-Mart, you'll see them selling cables with the same specification for 1/3 the price.
