Smile Smoking

Never tried it and don't intend too. Am 36 now, never tried any drugs or even drinking. The only one in the family (5 kids and mom) who doesn't smoke or drink and am pretty proud of it.I'm also a "regestered indian" and never been on welfare,so with all this going for me there should be some kind of award
I have a friend who starts and stops at will, kinda different but so is she I've known her for about 6 years and she's done so about 8 times.

Smoking

Gave up cigarettes after 15 years of them... two packs of Salems per day until I developed a nasty cough. Went to the doctor and he told me that I had bronchitis, probably brought on by breathing grain dust for so long without a mask. He also told me that those menthol cigs were chewing my lungs to bits and told me that if I did'nt quit I would have trouble breathing by the time I was 40...and I was 32 at the time! So it was cold turkey and I have'nt had another one since. Kept all the money it was costing for cigarettes in a mason jar for a while, until I did'nt have the urge to smoke anymore. Once in a great while I will have a cigar usually after dinner on a night out.

When I was in college I smoked a pipe to sort of stand out from the crowd, and every now and then I still do. It teaches you patience, trust me.

Never did chew. Nasty stuff.

Talking Smoking

I quit smoking March 9th 2002 and have been smoke free all this time. This is the second time I quit. I quit about 4 years ago for 14 months and started back up. That was about the stupidest thing I've ever done. I'm done this time.

On Oct. 16th 2002 I had 60% of my right lung because of a cyst caused from smoking. After they removed it, they sent it down for testing. NO cancer thank God, but they also found an infection. I'm doing GREAT now, I'm back to work and feeling better every day.

I don't preach not smoking, You got to do what you got to do. BUT if you want to quit, its not easy but it can be done.

JUST DO IT.

Jim.

Smoking

I have never smoked, but I have people close to me who do.
I am on the Rescue Squad in our community, I see the health troubles that folks end up with, COPD, emphasima, cancer, etc.
But, something in my nature makes me feel for the smoker in our society today.
Smokers are the whipping boys of society!
Need some more tax revenue? Raise the tax on tobacco!
Don't like to see people smoking in public? Outlaw smoking everywhere except back by the dumpster!
It's not PC to criticize very many groups in our midst, but the smokers are fair game.
Right in there with ****'s, Gun owners, SUV drivers, Christian fundamentalists, Sexual predators, ETC.
I agree, that the poorest citizens are the biggest group of smokers, the ones that can't seem to make ends meet, always seem to find money for smokes.
If our lawmakers were really honest, they would outlaw tobacco, but they can't lose the cash cow!!

Outlawing tobacco would be equivocal to the prohibition of other drugs like pot and coke and heroin and meth and LSD and mushrooms and PCP. It wouldn't work. People would just get more desperate and do crazy stuff, for a little tiny buzz. At least if you are going to have people robbing liquor stores for drugs, make it for a drug that has a psychotropic effect, for christ's sake!
My girlfriend quit a little over a year ago, and she is doing great. I never started...I wanted to be different!
Also, if tobacco users get taxed more, that's fine with me. Same with alcohol. If they don't like it, they can quit smoking and whining about it on the same day. I read in TIME magazine that every pack of cigarettes smoked costs the taxpayer $8.00 in medicare and subsidy healthcare costs. Add that figure up! They don't pay ENOUGH tax on the cigarettes. I think smokes should cost $10+ a pack to offset the cost out of my tax dollars to pay for the illnesses caused by the product. I also love the fact that municipalities are banning smoking in public places: I can't stand walking into a store and having to walk through the smoke of the people gathered around the door. If you want to consume your drug, do it in your house and car, I don't want to be exposed to it. Smokers wouldn't like it if I smoked a doobie and they had to smell it....

I never smoked a day in my life. I have a few friends that do and they have tried several times to quit using different methods but have yet to succeed. I've never had the desire to start, never will.

Smoking

Jerry,

Just thought I'd drop you a note to wish you some good luck. Go back a few posts and see my story!

Believe me when I say quitting smoking is NOT easy. Its probably the toughest thing I have ever had to do. BUT it is well worth the benefits.

Somethings that helped me:

Rinse your mouth with mouthwash about 10 times a day or more if you want to. It helps to get rid of the taste in your mouth and reminds you that you are quitting smoking.

Drink lots of water. It helps to flush them out of your system.

Keep some gum where you kept your cigarettes. This is good for when you have the craving to smoke one or just from habit you reach for one.

Go places that you know they don't allow smoking, such as the malls, or to a friends house that doesn't allow smoking in there house. This is a big help.

I hope this helps you out, I know it did me.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Good luck, and may the force be with you.

Jim

Smoking

I'm happy to say I haven't smoked one day in my life as well. It just dosen't appeal to me. Allmost all (or at least 98.9995%) of my friends have at least tried a "smoke", and at least 75% of them smoke every day (were not talking adults, were talking 16-18 year olds mind you). But, for me personally, I'm staying away from them. Now drinking is another story lol

Smoking

I smoked 2-3 packs a day for 20 years.
I quit for the final time 6 years ago and have not touched one.
I have been known to stand close to people while they smoke.
I don't think I'll ever stop wanting a drag. The urges pass quickly
And I got it undedr control. I used the patch the first time I quit and just went cold turkey the last time. Trick is try never to cheat
just down touch one.
No such thing as an ex-smoker, just smokers who don't.
I don't. My wife and both adult kids still do and I have real trouble with that but I'm nobody to tell anyone that they need to quit. But I tell them anyway. Wife and Daughter are quitting together starting february 3rd.

Make no mistake
Everyone who smokes will quit!
trick is quitting on your own terms!
Smokes are the single most difficult drug in the world to quit!
my support and best wishes for all who go this route you wont believe the sense of accomplishment you will feel.

Smoking

Well lets see i first started smoking CIGARS in the 8th grade and then that led to Marlboro Reds. THo one time i tried to cut down and quit and go to the light version... Woh big mistake i smoked three times as much and lots more money disapeared. I think that for me to quit (since every one i know smokes) i would have to move to a far away island with no one else around for like ten years.

It is definetely a sickness... but now i think that i just got use to smoking and holding a ciggarette and now i am screwed..

I'm one of those people who still smoke.

Started smokin' back when I was nine years ago....still hasn't stopped. I smoke a pack a day of Winstons. Once a day or two I smoke a few cigars.

Smoking

Reluctant smoker here. I started in high school. Funny thing is I was a three sport athlete and a all-star in two of the sports all the time smoking about a half of a pack a day. When I graduated high school and went to college it turned in to a pack a day and with out the sports to even things out I lost my stamina. Have not seen it since. When I craduated from college I forgot about my degree and became a cop. The academy was ugly. Running 2-4 miles a day while smoking 20-25 cigarettes a day sucks. Determined to quit when I got out I found that riding around in a police car for 12 hours did not lend itself to quiting smoking. Needing a change years later I quit police work and started selling cars. Selling cars was even more boring than police work. This is when I went up to 30 cigs a day.

I am now going back to police work and am trying my best to quit. I have quit several times ranging from 3 days to 5 weeks. I have tried everything except cold turkey and I'm starting to think that is the way to go.

Man, I hate cigarettes.

Smoking is a real drag........... Sorry I could'nt resist. I smoked for 15 years between the ages of 15 and 30. The only way I could quit was cold turkey. I agree 100% with Franklin3 in that everyone quits, sooner or later. Lung cancer is a terrible way to go. Heart disease is usually quicker but stroke will incapacitate the victim. Stroke will make you dependent upon others to move, eat, go to the toilet, ahhh the dignity of it all.

Looking forward to the rest of your life? Hmmmmmmmm, wait until you get there. How'd that happen?

BTW Lung cancer is not detectable until you have contracted it. There is no cure.
