I came across cherry 1978 F-150 when I was looking for parts for my Highboy (that was only $2000 which I am happy with) that has no rust other than surface rust from where the gravel chipped away the paint. The underneath is in great shape as well. HE told me he didn't drive it in the winter bc of the salt on the roads. The guy had a log book since 1984 of all the maintance records in the glove box. Which I might add he changed oil every 2500 miles. The A/c blew cold and the cab seals were tight no air leaks. It is a 300 with a 3 spd the column. I was looking to convert it to an AOD can you help me out on what i should be looking for like what years will work. I am looking to set it up as a daily driver as I commute forty miles a day to work. I will get pictures up when it gets nicer out. You dont find too many rust free trucks from 1978 in Nebraska so I jumped all over it.
Welcome to FTE, just my opinion, but you might be money ahead to just run a nice rebuild or tune-up and drive it first, the 300's got pretty decent mileage, and depending on the ratio, you might have a good commuter as it is.... sounds like a nice one! Congrats!

anthony, the three speed and the four speed have the same final drive. there is a little difference in the gear ratios of the under gears, but the only major difference is that the four speed has a low "granny" gear that the three doesnt.
congrats and welcome to !! as you can see im from NE too! where bouts are located?
I know that Trey, That's why he should switch, That 1st gear is handy, if/when you ever need it, although it's a little low for normal driving...I always start out in 2nd...Too much rubber in 1st..
A little cold in Nebraska?
well, im goin to school in north dakota at the moment, but im from halsey. bout an hour and a half north of north platte. ill be goin to north platte in the fall though.
It went from 60 degrees and sunny yesterday to 2 in of snow windy and 32 deg today and 45 and rain tomorrow. I think the auto would be great in town that's why I was considering a conversion.
well, shiftin in town doesnt bother me so i stick with the stick. lol. but then again, my left leg is my jump leg for basketball and i drove my 76 with a manual clutch through stop and go traffic for a whole summer, so it not that big of a deal for me to hold the clutch at lights. lol.
