I've got a 95 F250 Powerstroke 7.3. For about a year now, the truck periodocically drops out of gear and the OD Off light on the shifter starts flashing. It will eventually slam back into gear and drive ok, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for a day, sometimes for a week. When this is not happening, the truck runs great and shifts fine. I brought it into a shop and the codes said it was the speed sensor. The mechanic replaced the sensor but still kept getting a code. He ended up replacing the computor (costly) and the code disappeared. The truck ran fine for a week, now the same problem. Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems worse in the morning and better in the afternoon. It also seems to have fewer problems if I turn the overdrive off. I live on St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, and have access to only local mechanics. Not a good situation. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you need to go get your cash back on the computer. So have codes set again? If so get them and post them.
Check and see if he did change the VSS on the rear differential. Pull it and check it out. If there is a little metal dont flip out wipe it clean and reinstall.
Sounds like a burnt clutch to me.
Also locate the wiring harness at the tranny and check the connection. Carefully remove it and check for moisture. If there is any dry it out good and then place some di-electric grease around the parameter of the inside of the connector and seal it back up.
Check your fluid level and color, should have nice bright red no other traces of color at all. After that repost.
