Do It Now Mod! Part 1- Getting started, with starters!
Just wanted to share some of the Good, and not so good stuff that I have come across as I have worked on my truck over the years. This will include aesthetic, engine, electrical, mechanical, or just information I think others may use. Knowledge not shared is knowledge wasted right?
So with that- here is a recent starter experiance that wound up very well!!
I recently had a chance to install a High Amp Napa(NAE 17802) gear reduction starter after the standard Napa starter(NAE 17578) failed. It was the only one they had left and they did not think it would fit. Plus it only has 2 bolt holes, not 3.
Well I can tell you it does fit. And it is actually easier to get to the bolts. The only modfication required was slightly bending the battery lead for the starter. Other than that it bolts right in. And HOLY COW DOES IT FLY!!. It was very apparent from the first time I cranked the key that this thing means business. So I took the time to hookup my IDS and record the cranking speed of this Hi-Amp starter on my NEW not broke in motor, and then the cranking speed of a standard starter on a 120,000 mile motor.
High Amp starter =221 RPM
Standard Starter = 151 RPM
The cost differance between the two was negligable. So next time you replace your starter, don't even mess with the standard starter, go straight to the High Amp one. It flat ROCKS!!
Hmmm... that's a new one for me. I've been eyeballing Powermaster's starter now for quite awhile... so far, I like what Powermaster offers. I've been a running the high-amp alternator from them for awhile now and it's been great! What's your opinion of the two? Here's the link: Powermaster 9051 - Powermaster OEM-Style High-Torque Replacement Starters - Overview - SummitRacing.com I thought I read somewhere it was a gear reductions tarter, but I can't find it anywhere. What do you guys think?
It's supposedly 4.4:1... not bad I guess. I've seen a few starters with a higher wattage rating than this one... I believe 3.5kw was the highest. I'm assuming I want higher right? I've been pleased with Powermaster and I trust the name... I don't know. Tough call... I know my stock Napa reman is crap. The other day when I went to unscrew the wires from the starter solenoid terminals (I was cleaning ALL my connections and replacing battery terminals), the guts of the solenoid spun around inside! Can't be good... so, a new starter is in the plan, somewhere. HAHA!!!
[QUOTE]High Amp Napa(NAE 17802) gear reduction starter after the standard Napa starter(NAE 17578)[QUOTE]
I will have to call about the pricing when they open, couldn't remember exactly last night. I wil say I know it was not much more then the standard one.
And the High-AMP one is a 4kw starter. It is looking like the standard starters are a 2.5kw.
Who makes the starter with the highest wattage rating and is also a gear reduction starter as well? I think the stock starters on the 7.3L were a mistake... that, the '99 cup holder, and the door locks are the only really crappy things about my truck I have to complain about! I fixed the locks a long time ago by replacing the thermal resistor with a solid metal plate and those things jamb up and down!
Just curious... when I was looking about how to do locks, I could find some extremely descriptive instructions with a TON of pictures. I took a bunch of my own and was wondering if anybody would be interested in a writeup? I also did the same for my glow plug replacement. NOWHERE on the internet could I find pictures of even detailed instructions as to what to expect... so, if you guys are interested, I might be able to post a couple writeups on that.
To keep up with the thread jacking, did you ever get around to writing that write up for the door locks? I need to get around to doing that soon. It's a PITA.

But yeah, back to starters...
Start a new thread on the lock. I would like to see what you did. Thanks.
No, I didn't... nobody replied so I figured nobody was interested. I will try to get something up either tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully, nothing will come up.
Back at you guys: has anybody done some extensive research and found the biggest baddest starter for the 7.3L? My Stock reman is just not cutting it...
