so i want to buy a 429 its out of a 1968 tbird, i think he said its a thunderjet, how good would that work out in my 1979 f100 2wd, what are the horsepower numbers can you really mod the engine, is it a good idea oh and the guy wants 600 bucks for the motor, of course i will have to have it rebuilt and stuff but has all accesories.
ok thanks well i don't know how much they are roughly going for and i want it to come with all the accesories because i was reading up and some of the parts are kind of pricey if you go like broncograveyard.com and so on, so thats where i am at, how much do they usually go for?
"Thunderjet" is code word for just a plain 429......as opposed to a COBRAjet. Anyways, if it's out of a 68, it's worth 600 bucks. If it was from the mid to late 70's then it would be only worth about half that. The difference is in the heads. The later models use lousy low compression heads. Look at the casting number on the heads. That will give you an idea of the year and what it REALLY came out of.
well its in the tbird and well how good of a motor is it? and what would be a better buy a 429 or 460 i just like the sound of being able to tell people i got a 429 under the hood
It's all in the heads.... Like I said, check the casting number. You can't really ask which one is better.....because there were so many different models. Some had over 350 horsepower. Some barely had 200 horsepower.
Look over the exhaust ports on the head, it will have a casting number(I think it's the 3rd port) If it starts with C8, C9, or D0, it was a factory 365HP engine. If it is D1, D2, or D3, it is considerably lower number not worth the price.
so if it is the 68 tbird is that real good or just better than the 73 models
....it's just better than the 73 models. If you have a 73 or later.....you're wasting your time if you try and do anything to it without changing your heads. A 68 already has a decent set of heads. Though not nearly as good as the Ford Motorsport SCJ heads.
That's just a 70 model 429. Pretty much the same as the 68. One thing to keep in mind, the guy on craig's list had the block and heads listed as DOVE castings. This is incorrect. It's a ZERO, not the letter "0". D0VE-A and D0VE-C
