The other day I started my motor and it sounded like a gun going off under the hood. Blew the PS hose off, no big deal. Replaced it and now my reservoir is leaking. Its not leaking around the HP hose fitting but seems to be around the plastic reservoir. What holds that thing on? Replacing it, which I haven't had the pleasure to do yet, involves one of two things, I think. Moving the fan shroud over so you can get a pulley puller on it or taking out the whole bracket that holds the air pump and PS pump on. Am I right and what is the easiest way or is there another way? Today I removed the air filter and the intercooler pipe off to try and see where the leak is coming from but I can't pinpoint it, even after cleaning it all up.
I pulled the fan shroud and rented the PS pulley removal tool from AAP and it worked fine. After I did the job, a guy I worked with said I could have removed the bracket thingy with the vacuum pump instead.
What I didn't do that I wish I would have was find some way to flush all the old fluid out of there. From what I recall there is a line from the PS pump that goes down to about the level of the oil pan then comes back up. Don't really know what that is for, I just know it had a lot of old PS fluid that I didn't flush out. No big deal. I've had my new pump in for about 2 years and no probs.
my puller will pull the pulley with the shroud installed, so I don't have to remove the shroud or the pump mount. as for fluid ATSCO tests them with ATF, I have been running ATF in power steering for over 30 years with no problems.
Untill about 10 years ago Ford power steering systems have called for type F ATF up to about 91 or 92 and Mercon after that. I haven't seen any owners manuals after 2000. ATF works a lot better than that crap power steering fluid with additives to swell seals and shut up noisy pumps. All that stuff is good for is masking symptoms that will leave you stranded on the side of the road. Just use good quality ATF. I'm using mobil 1 in mine now just the same as in my 5 speed.
If you have room .Why not try it . You have to take the metal fitting that goes through the plastic part off after the line is removed .
Last night I cleaned up around the plastic tank where it meets the pump the best I could and put goop, yes, that's what I said, goop around it. Of course I couldn't get all the way round it but I thought it would be worth a try. If it still leaks I'll take the metal fitting off and try to remove the plastic. I don't know if it was my hose blowing off with force that jared it to leak or what?
