I've searched and read everything I can find about camshafts that will work with the SD system in my 94 Bronco with the 5.8 and factory roller cam. The main criteria seem to be duration of under 215 deg and lobe separation of at least 114 deg.
I contacted Comp Cams tech department and let them know that my Bronco is getting a bassani y-pipe/headers, a borla cat-back, k&n filtercharger, roller rockers, electric fans, bigger coil and the timing bumped. I'm not looking for horsepower, just torque and mileage. My truck also never sees above 2600 rpm. It's for camping/fishing/hunting. The cam suggested is the 35-512-8. It's a 5.0 cam, but that's just changing the firing order, not a big deal. The duration numbers are 206/212, lift is .480 and the lobe separation is 114.
As far as I can tell this fits the criteria and will work with the SD computer. Does anyone know how these numbers compare to the stock roller cam that came in my truck? That's information I can't seem to find anywere.
Mike
It's not worth the trouble for that cam just add 1.7 rockers and you'll pretty much match it. The stock F4TE roller cam in that motor produces 256/266 advertised duration and 0.422/0.448" lift with 1.6 rockers, 0.050" duration is a bit less than the other cam but in the same ballpark if I remember correctly.
1.7 rockers don't require new pushrods and are available for as little as $100, and at most the only gaskets that will have to be repalced are between the the upper/lower intake and valve covers. A new roller cam is $300 alone and the motor has to be stripped down to the bare longblock to change it, the complete intake, water pump and timing cover all have to come off so all those gaskets will be needed.
