well a junkyard would be the cheapest. other than that check local trader papers, and check prices at all the autoparts stores for remans. the autoparts stores are gonna have a core charge so take that into consideration if your trans has a broken case or some other major unfixable failure.

if you don't need the tranny right away... figure out which one you have and start looking on your local craigs list (www.Craigslist.com). You can usually find a person that will rebuild on the weekend or someone else parting their truck out cheap. Sometimes there is a couple on there waiting to be bought. Also talk to your local autoparts store guys... I found my tranny mechanic through a guy who works at O'reilly's... Ask around and your sure to find a ex or current tranny mechanic that does weekend work for side cash...
