I have a 2007 ford ranger, When i am traveling with the truck in gear and let off the gas I get a high pitch whining sound. If I take the truck out of gear it stops. I have went to a couple shops and have received different answer from replacing the clutch to bleeding the hydrolic clutch system. When I check the reservoir it is a little low and the rubber boot in the reservoir had fluid in side it.
check the fluid level IN the transmission. I think they fixed the plug problem a long time ago but you may have one low on lubricant.
If low it may be IN the transmission with worn gear cluster etc. I know on my 94 I had a whirring sound in 1st that was like you describe and the cluster was toast.
fill the resevoir and monitor, replace the rubber piece neither one should cause noise.
it mainly occurs between the speeds of 15 to about 55, it does not do it thru acceleration or shifting, only when I take my foot off the gas pedal. When I am driving and it does it if I take it out of gear and put it in neutral it stops.
