The d60 will run me about $800-1200 around here, that's b4 I swap gears. The "rear steer setup" I'm speaking of is prolly gonna cost me about $300-400 and maybe $20 to fix the brakes...I'm not real good at math, but this seems kinda simple. But after some well put advice, I'm just going to run a 60 rear and forget my "bargain" rear steer idea.

Then again maybe I'll just rebuild my 5-ton rocks and throw them under there.

first off....HOW FOR THE LOVE OF THE 7lb 10oz BABY JESUS WILL YOU PUT REAR STEER UNDER YOUR TRUCK FOR $3-400?

You need:
a 60FF housing
60 inner Cs
60 knuckles
custom inner shafts
stock stubs but probably should upgrade to 35sp
drive flanges
full hydro setup w/ orbital, shifter and lines.
full beef PS steering pump OR two regular saggy pumps
brake brackets, hubs, spindles, rotors and calipers.
machine and fab work
+misc consumables.

-let me guess....your sisters husbands brothers best friend knows someone who will do the work for free and you have all these parts sitting in your shop BUT you dont have a 60 front housing.

5 ton rocks would be bad *** as long as the pumpkin doesnt drag the ground with those puney 36" tires you talked about earlier.

What would top speed be with the 5ton's and 36"s like 20mph? Redlined?

well it shouldnt be too bad...

There was a 6.xx ratio (not 6.72:1), a 8.xx ratio and a 10.xx ratio.

Figuring a 36" tire and a 10.50:1 ratio (I cant remember the exact number) you'll be turning about 5500rpm at 55 with a 1:1 top gear. Slightly less if OD

I thought the 5 tons had a lower (numerically) gear than the 2.5's

That's IF I ran with the d44 I was talking about earlier...the 60 rear I speak of, it'll stay a 60 rear. The whole purpose of using a front end was to avoid building a custom rear steer axle.

The reason I say I'll just use 5-tons is b/c apparently a 300-6 or a mild 302 that'll prolly end up being in the ballpark of 200hp in a vehicle weighing somewhere around 4000lbs seems way too much to ask of a dana 44 w/ 4.10's on 35's. Not to mention (not that I need to) that I don't have a heavy right foot. I love how the answer for everything seems to be Dana 60's, some 40"+ tires and a 460...even on a ranger-based vehicle.

Also, the 5-tons came with 6.44 gears. Not sure about the rest of the ratios (8.xx, 10.xx...thinkin maybe 8.46 but I can't remember) ground clearance provided I could pull off 40's on the trail. Btw, who drives 55mph on a trail anyway?

My bad, missed the post about the gear ratios. Sorry.

And if a 44 won't work for you, take your own advice and upgrade. But if you just wanna hang around and twist everything I say that's cool too, I've gotten the advice I was looking for and I'm running with it. You can rest at night now, knowing I'm not running a d44 or rear steer...and if it gets you off my back I'll even say it's b/c ur 460 destroying your axle scared me out of doing it. And now I'd sell my first born just to have a 60 so my 300-6 won't break anything.
