I have a 2001 f-250 2wd with 5.4 engine with 79000 miles on it. About 2 weeks ago while out cruising my ABS light came on and the speedometer went to 0 and about 2 seconds later it cleared and then a few seconds later it did it again for about 2 seconds and cleared and at the same time it felt like the engine was skipping under a pull. When it cleared the second time all was well for the rest of the trip ( about 30 miles). The truck has been fine for the past 2 weeks until yesterday when I started out the engine was skipping and sluggish under accelleration and it did this for about 20 miles or so then the ABS light came on again but just momentarily like before and after that the engine ran fine again and no more problems. This morning I went out on a 30 mile round trip and everything was perfectly normal. Does anyone have any idea of what is starting to fail to cause these intermittent problems?
ABS and Speedo are probably the speed sensor in the top of the rear diff. Take a look at it, 20 bucks from auto zone for a new sensor (might as well replace it while you have it out..) check it for metal shavings and wipe clean. Clean out the hole really well when you have the sensor out before reinstalling the new one. If you find metal shavings service (or have serviced) the rear diff.

Luck!
Thank you for your help. I went to NAPA today and got a new speed sensor, replaced it and all is well now ( so far ). The old one was clean ( no signs of any problems in the differential ). Thanks again.
