460 trouble!

I've got a 1985 F350 that I just put a 460 that I rebuilt in. I have it running but it won't run good. It backfires through the carb. and won't stay at a constant speed it moves from 2000 to 1500 and idles way to high. All the wires are in the right spot and tight and the distributor cap is not cracked or wet. The timing should be close. Any ideas???

Vaccum leak maybe, I'd get a timing light on it to be 100% sure

I agree, it sounds like the distributer is 180 degrees out.

Go over your basics. Vacuum leaks, timing, carb, rockers, etc. Backfiring out carb is most likely from wrong firing order (you checked that though), timing, rocker too tight on intake side, bad valve/seat, VERY lean mixture (thoguh usually only under load). Go over the basics again and if no dice do a compression test.
