Starting troubles
My 1960 F-600 with a 292 sat for about three weeks without starting it. This weekend I went to start it and the only way it would start is if i would poured some gas in the carb and it would barely idle for less than five seconds then cut out. It had an old 2 barrel Holley and ran fine on that since i bought the truck. So I tried switching it with another 2 barrel Holley that i rebuilt and it did the same thing. It has gas coming to the carb from the fuel pump and the fuel filter is clean. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Alex
My first guess would have been that your fuel pump diaphram is going out and allowing the fuel to syphon back into the tank. When you start it up and get it to run it will take a couple times them fill the carb bowl. If it doesn't I'd run a vacuum/pressure test on the pump. Also, try removing your gas cap when you start it up next time.
Could be th egas drained back and the needle valve stuck closed, but with a second carb, chances of that are slim - possible but slim.
Water or sediment may have solidified in the fuel filter.
I'd start it up a couple times using the gas then it should run by itself.
Do you get a good squirt from the accelerator pump?
Try removing one of the bottom bowl to body bolts to completely drain the old fuel from the bowl, put the screw back in, make sure you have good fuel, and try again.
These carbs are fairly simple, so as long as you have good fuel in it, it should run. Sometimes mine with the same engine and Holley 2 barrel sit for 4 to 6 weeks without being run, and as long as the fuel is clean, water free, and not too old they start right up.
