Please help me understand the role of the aftercat O2 sensor. I have always been under the impression that this sensor is not used for "engine management" I thought it only read info and would throw a code if the info was incorrect. Someone recently has told me I am wrong and that the aftercat O2 sensor is used for "engine management" ie Fuel trims, etc. Your feedback is appreciated.
the pre cat sensor is what controlls fuel trims. the aft cat sensor is there to detect weather the catilist is functing correctly. so if precat and post cat signals match then the pcm would throw a code for catilist inefficancy.
hope this helps ya.

thanks for the feedback. That is what I always believed. someone else is telling me that the aftercat sensor is used to correct fuel of it is too lean or too rich. Please keep the feedback coming.thanks again!!!!!
Cheezit is right. The after cat oxygen sensor has only one function and that is to tell the guy at the emissions testing station that the cat is bad.
this is getting a little condusing. I did a search on google and I did find some posts on sites that said some cars use the aftercat to fine tune the fuel trim. I have not found a official document explaining this just some people posting, but they sounded like they new what they were talking about.
