I have a beautiful 1994.5 f-250 with only 88,000 miles on it
It came with a basic $275 Edge Module on it. The kind you have to take the front off and move the jumpers to adjust
My question is, I removed it and do notice a loss in power, but the truck seems quieter and also I've heard the edge can do damage
Should I put it back on,I'm towing a 3000lb boat with a 2500lb camper in the back of the truck
thanks Jim
Based on my experience with Edge products as it concerns the 6.0, I would suggest getting rid of it. However, that experience doesn't apply to, but it's the only way of judging Edge products that I have.
Take the power enhancement out of the picture. Does it seem like the truck runs better to you without it? If it does, then there something more then likely not in sync and I wouldn't run it anymore.
Your taking a risk leaving it in there. It may or may not do anything, but(in my opinion) I wouldn't chance it, but that's just me.
I did see that
I was( we ) just saying it is notorious for the 6.0 but that is really the only one I have heard about and I am not sure how well deserved it is on the 6.0 ? but the rumours were enough to get me to dump it
No, it's deserved. The tranny isn't a weak point with the 6.0 powertrain, in fact, a lot of people would say it's the 6.0s shining point. The sheer number of people with fried autos that were running an Edge type module are too much for just meer coincidence. I personally know quite a few that have had issue, so I'm not going on just by people that are on here as that can be quite iffy on validity.
You are right the older you go with vehicles, the less sophisticated that they are as far as computers go and the Edge type programmers really need less sophisticated motors and trannys to really work well(that is exclusively my opinion, nothing hard in the way of evidence to back that up yet other then the 6.0 and later engines don't seem to like Edge type devices as much as they do custom devices).
To the OP: After all that irrelevant stuff to you, I can say this. You'll probably be alright, I'm just apprehensive about Edge products given their record with current Ford engines. Not much in the way of help. Have you tried posting this in a more engine/year specific forum? They'll probably have more relevant info for you.
Get rid of it! Edge tuners are not good for our trucks. Probably worse for it if you are towing because it'll raise your EGT's.
Get a good custom tuned chip from PHP, DP Tuner, or TW. A PHP chip like mine with 6 tunes on it runs about $350 from Rosewood Diesel. DIY-Injectors.com
I love my PHP, others stand by DP Tuner and TW. I have Stock, High Idle, 35hp Tow, 65hp Econo, 100hp Performance, and 140hp Extreme tunes.
To the OP, if your trans is shifting hard, that would probably be the only reason to get rid of it. Sounds like your Edge is nothing more than a 10k mod. The engine noise is from increased ICP, which isn't hurting much if any. If you have a 5 speed, most definately keep the Edge. No harm can be done with your 90cc injectors.
