2000 Excursion having issues-ideas??
I have a 2000 Excursion. When I am accelerating-usually over the road at speeds over 40-it starts to get jerky and vibrate like mad. If I let off the gas, it stops. As soon as I push on the gas again-it starts back up. It's only got 132000 miles on it. One issue that I did have was the 4 wheel locking hub on the driver's side broke into pieces and so a mechanic took it out and left it that way. Could this be causing the problem or is it probably tranny or what? We have had a rodent problem in the truck as well. Could it be something to do with that? Thanks for any input!!
Welcome to the Forum.
A little more information on the Excursion would be nice, like gas or diesel.
If it's a gas it could be a misfire which could mean a plug or COP issue and having a scanner connected may tell you which cylinder or cylinders are misfiring. Most auto parts stores will scan for you.

It is the V10 gas engine. I have not had the wheels balanced for about a year or so when we had new tires put on. The problem seems to have more to it than that though. I have noticed it sometimes makes a popping sound when it is sitting. It sounded like an exhaust type sound though. The muffler fell off and we just had a straight pipe put on it today. Thanks for your thoughts on this.
Ball joints come to mind......especially if it starts and stays til about 60....thats what mine did....it was a pretty good vibration from the front end felt via the steering wheel. also was getting a Clunk on larger bumps.
Thanks Hollywood-but I really don't think it is that. I had the wheel hub and bearings replaced in the driver's side when I got new tires. This vibration is not the same as that one. It really feels engine or tranny related. It does shift fairly smooth, sometimes delayed, but will start to vibrate right afterwards. If I let off the accelerator, it rides smooth. It only starts the vibration with direct acceleration.

If the problem goes away or at least is decreased when you let off the gas than you don't have a tranny problem or a ball joint problem. Have you had any check engine lights? I agree with Chris - you most likely have a misfire which if it is that evident it should set a trouble code. Have the spark plugs ever been changed?
The check engine light has not been on at all. I've been having that problem in my other vehicle-a mini van-the check engine light is on and it was diagnosed as a misfire in one of the cylinders. Perhaps I will take it to an auto place and see if they can get any codes off of it. Thanks for all your help.

I bought 10 new COP boots and installed them. Half or more of the COP springs were not pushed all the way on!
The old girl runs great! No more misfire and much more power and quicker throttle response. Also picked up a couple MPGs, too! That last COP is a SOB to get to, but well worth the trouble. Disconnect the COP from the wiring, change the boot, make sure that the spring is pushed as far as it can pushed on, put the boot on the plug, reconnect COP to wiring. Go for a ride Good luck!
It's a coil. Just changed #4. I never did get a CEL, but it was bucking pretty hard when the TC locked up at 40 mph. The codes indicated a misfire on #3,#4, and #8. I went to Advance Auto to read and reset the codes. In their parking lot, I changed #3 coil with #1 and drove down the road and then back. The scanner then said only #4 misfire so i changed it in their parking lot. The old one had moisture in the boot. Smooth as silk now. I can only guess my plug change three months ago should have included boots as well.
Thanks! I plan to get my truck to an auto place this week and see what it says. I'm probably going to go ahead and do a tune up anyway-regardless of what it says, but it sounds like you guys are on the right track. Hopefully mine will be back to her old self soon. I just love my truck. Had it 4 years and can't bear to part with it.
Still having problems with Excursion
Okay, replace all 10 spark plugs and 2 ignition coils that were cracked. still running bad. Figured out the fuse for the OBD was missing, so got a fuse and had it diagnosed. Showing P0113-ITA Sensor 1-circuit high output; P0102 MAF or BAF circuit low input; P0302 Cyl 2 misfire; P0333 Cyl 3 misfire; P0310 Cyl 10 misfire. Still running real bad and now it's shifting harder. Now what?? I have no clue how to fix this stuff and no money to pay a mechanic. My dad has done all the work so far. How hard is it to take care of these things? thanks everyone!!
