I'm in the process of getting an iginition setup for my 306. It's a '91 block with an e303 roller cam. What I'm hoping to do is get an HEI distributor with vacuum advance and no module or box on the fender (duraspark i think?) I'm on a rather tight budget, so HEI may not be an option. Even an original Ford distributor would be all I need. Are there any distributors that came with vacuum advance in a Mustang? I'll maybe be replacing the drive gear with a bronze gear, but if I can find one that has a roller drive gear, I'd be very happy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I *think* 1985 mustang HO 5.0 was the only factory roller cam engine to use the duraspark distributor. These have vacuum advances, but they use the fender mounted module.
This item is a rather rare find, since it was a limited production run part. But, most any SBF DS2 dist would work, with the bronze gear swap.
Cool! I work part time at an auto parts store so I've been taking advantage of the employee discount I can get a remanufactured distributor for an '85 Mustang HO for a quite reasonable price. When I look at the description it says with steel gear or cast gear. I assume the steel gear is for a flat tappet cam and the cast is for a roller cam, but I'm still unsure. Of course, I can still just swap the bronze gear out if need be. I've heard that I can take an old points style distributor from a mid 70s 302 and replace the points with an electronic module and change the distributor gear, is this correct? Thanks again so much for your help.
I use pertronix on my points distributors. It just replaces the points and you have electronic ignition and no one can tell as it bolts right into where the points go.
I might see about getting an old distributor from a wrecker if I can't find a mustang HO distributor. Turns out the reman ones from work aren't for HO applications. Thanks alot guys!
Heck, there wouldn't be much (if any) difference between the 85 HO and any other 5.0 DS2 dist, aside from the gear.
But yeah, basicly any 302/5.0 dist would work, with the gear change, and whatever means required to make it trigger the coil. The DS2 dist's just have a rather nice advance curve in stock format (think close to the old dual point 289 HP), and can be recurved to meet whatever your needs.
