headers install

well got the headers installed yesterday. Man am I getting old. It took me from 9am till 6pm. that included removing one broken bolt, trmoving the A.I.R system because I had to cut the tubes that go to the manifolds. then I had to go to the parts house to get a shorter belt from the pump removal, a set of spark plug wires and had to buy a set of longer headers bolts because apparently the P.O. had someone replace a manifold gasket and probably broke off a bolt and just drill it out so it was striped, no sweat the longer boltys fixed it.
anyway, after all that then I am sore. My whole body was aching, I think I am getting old. when I was younger, it would not have taken me as long and I would have been drinking beer the whole time and would have been ready for some more today.

Don't sweat it man... you're not alone with your aches and pains, the only question is do you feel it was worth all the effort?

well yea it was. I guess I can feel a difference. There were exhuast leaks that I didnt realize that were there that are not there now, the engine runs a ton quieter. the driver side manifold was cracked almost all the way around between the two middle cylinders. The [assenger side was fine but was also leaking a little. Im gonna take it out in a bit to pick up my grandson. i will see how it runs at higher speeds.

Anyone need a passenger side manifold

Sounds good.

Are you running a 460 or 351? and what kind of headers did you use?

I hear you about the aches and pains. I find that a day wrenching now means aching hands the next day.

Let us know what brand of headers and what you think of them. This is my next desired upgrade.

This particular job gets a lot easier after you do 3 or 4 of them.........unless you break bolts, then you can throw all that out the window.

the headers are the Ford Racing Shorties. I didnt take any pics because I would have broken the camera when I threw it get mad.

First had a broken bolt on the drivers side.

scraped my arms getting the diverter valves and hoses from the back of the engine that hook to the manifolds. I had to cut them to get the manifolds off. then I had to cut the hoses that connect the diverter valves to the upper plumbing. Then getting the pump off was a whole other story, which would have resulted in a broken camera as well.

Then when installing the new headers, apparently someone had a broken bolt and just drilled it out. The new header bolt would not go deep enough to catch threads so I had to get longer header bolts.

I does actually run better, I guess I can feel a difference, I just drove it around town. The spark knock is still there. That is not why I changed to headers, wasnt really expecting it to be gone but was hoping. I guess my next step is to have the injectors professionally cleaned.

Other than the usual problems though, they fit great and lined up perfect with the facory Y pipe

The driver side manifold was cracked almost all the way around

I have the 5.8 351. I got them threw Jegs. they were about 300.00 not real sure of the total. I believe SUMMITRACING also has them, but they are usually the same prices. Good luck with it. As far as the true duel, from what I am told its kinda a waste of time when a 3inch single flows just as well. Thats what I have on mine

BTW, I see we are neighbors

Be prepared to go in and re-torque the header bolts in about 1K miles. Good job on the install. Headers seem like they'd be so easy to install, but are usually a bitch. Which is why exhaust shops charge so much (if they agree to install them at all).
