Broken door handle defect?

At work we have 97 F350 cab-frame box truck, about once a month the interior driver side door handle brakes. My questions are:

1. Is this common for this generation of truck?
2. It there a steel or metal replacement that I can suggest to my boss getting?

I tried to search this out but didn't find anything for a truck this old.

Not common and my thoughts are this....Is the door aligned properly to provide good fit for opening / closing without slamming anything and a nice latch ? Is the driver overagressive?

Not sure about the alignment issue but since this is a U-Haul truck I think its safe to say that a good number of customers aren't gentle with the door handle or the door for that matter.

A truck that old is bound to have worn door hinges, which will allow the door to sag and bind up on the latch in the pillar. It probably has had them for the past six or seven years too.

One of my old trucks would do this sometimes but if I messed with it, it would almost seem to hook back up in place.

I'll see what condition the hinges are in when I go to work today who knows maybe I can finally get the thing fixed and have it stay fixed.

From what I've seen, Uhaul will run a truck until the engine, transmission, body, frame, axles, steering wheel and pedals are gone. Then they will try to combine them to make another truck.

This truck is near retirement anyway but I ask this more out of curiosity.

Actually we run the trucks until about 200-210K miles depending on how many major problems the truck has had during its life. Though I have seen a handful be retired at little more than 190K.

Went to work today checked the door and latches and both seem to be in good shape and straight so I'm thinking it maybe how the handle is mounted is causing the problem.

Take your door panel off and look at the mechanism that your handle mounts to. It has one bolt I think that mounts it to the door, and that mechanism has a cable that goes over to the latch to make it release. It is probably getting worn and needs to be replaced. I think the latch, cable and the handle mechanism comes as one piece. Its been a few years since I last had to change one. Sometimes you can get it to give you a little more life if you spray every thing that moves including the latch with a good super lubricant and work it a little. I wouldn't use WD-40 as it is more of a solvent and will dry out and actually make it worse. If you replace everything you will find that you will quit breaking your handles and the door will open real nice and easy. If you want a metal handle you can get one for an earlier model that had the metal handles, like in the 8O's. The door panels are a little bit different but the handles will work they just don't fit in the opening as nicely. Napa and Carquest carry them in their service lines. I hope that helps.

Every time I've rented or been in a rental Uhaul vehicle (or trailer), it's quite apparent that it has had zero maintenance its entire life.
