Teardown

I tore down a 7.3 today I traded for, that had a bad headgasket.

I know the guy that has owned it for the last 12-13 years and doubt seriously if he ever touched it with a wrench, so I'm sure he paid to have any work done to it.
This is what I found.
Aftermarket thermostat and the hole the check ball is in was stopped up with silicone. Possible reason for it to overheat(not sure)
The back on each side tried to turn just loosening the injector lines.
It had a rebuilt IP and the bottom nut was not on it, found it and the washer under the intake on the valleypan.
All injectors came out easy, even too easy maybe except one I finally used an impact on it and it came apart.
The cold advanc and fast idle temp sender was unplugged and the prongs bent over. How this coluld have happened I have no clue.
It had an extra wire tied in to the fuel solonoid I assume because of a no power condition.
Passebger side headgasket was leaking between the cykinder and water port, the cylinder next to it had a visible crack in the head.
7 ac plugs 2 with about a 1/4 inch burnt off them 1 swollen, 1 autolite also swollen.
The cdr looked good it was pretty clean.
I have no idea what caused it to blow the gasket or if it got hot and blowed, or blew then got hot, but it did get hot. I just wanted everyone to know what kind of shoddy work and parts a guy can pay good money for, because I know he wasn't the one that worked on it.

Its amazing how little some people care about the work they do.
I think allot of it is not knowing any better.
My trucks PO was vary proud to tell me it had brand new autolights and he never used SCA's, becuase that stuff is just snake oil.

I wanted the tranny, I really only wanted the motor for the rockers and the wireing harness and solid state controller, I have a 6.9 I'll build for the crew, I'm just going to use some parts off the 7.3. I stuck the ZF on a 6.9 today that is low mileage.
Heres a pic of the bad 7.3 and the tranny.

Considering how dirty the motor is, that bell housing looks new.

I do have to wonder why there is a license plate in there, up by the AC compressor? You working on a new forced air intake that we don't know about yet Star?

When I bought the donor truck for this 6.9 the guy told me that it had a leak in the hard line from the fuel header to the pump. When I got the thing out and started the tear down I found where some one had tried to use jb weld on the line where it was cracked. They also had tried to seal the connections with sillycone instead of buying the rubber vibro seals lol.

Yea it is amazing what you find sometimes, I once found a deep3/4 SNAPON socket used for a bushing on a Tcase mount.

Hey, star if you've still got it up on the hoist, could ja take a pic from the other side so I can get a good look at the oil cooler? oh, never mind, I just reread your 1st post and you already discombobulated it.
