You can't really go by the year alone. Get the past maintenance history (oasis report) from a dealer and a Carfax report to see what if anything has been done to that particular truck. As suggested a look through the tech folder sticky at the top of this forum is a good idea too. The key is to get all the info you can.
i will. but i really can"t beleve this moters are as bad as i hear. how could they have made and sold so many of them
In all honesty(and I'm sure there alot of people on here that wish I would just shut up on this) I strongly believe that the biggest problem is owner and tech ignorance from the get go on how to handle these new "high performance" diesel engine. To me that is the single biggest contributing factor to why these engines have such a horrible stigma attached to them.
Now don't get me wrong, they do have some "quirks", a couple I would call flaws and some I would just say are something that you have to "drive around"(although some would argue that they are all flaws, I believe I could make a strong argument otherwise though).
I personally love this engine and think it's much better then the 7.3, the key is knowledge and the execution of that knowledge.
Do a search and read the tech folder. Plenty of info about purchasing a new 6.0
Wow, what makes you say that? Hmmm, mine's great. That's the first time I heard someone say that, and based on my experience I'm shocked to hear it from anyone at all. Maybe I missed something somewhere... Did you have a bad experience with an 05?
To the OP, I think the 05 6.0 is a fine engine, as long as you are solid with the maintenance, as with the rest of them. I have read on the internet that the 05 was the beginning of the effective corrections of the old problems with the original 6.0s, and that they got better every year after that through 07. But I have learned to take what I read on the internet with a grain of sand. Everyone I talk to in the real world that has a 05 through 07 6.0 seems very happy with them.
05s did have a problem part if I'm not mistaken. Ford had to come up with an updated part for that. Other then that, I'm not aware of anything that makes it any more prone to problems.
Snap to Connect(STC) fitting was introduced in 05. There were two repair kits for that debacle. The last one came out in late 06 or early 07. That kit fixes the issue for about $40.
"tech ignorance" and its still an issue....just look at the guy with the youtube video's. Lots of people out there claiming they can fix this engine. lots of people can slap a part or 2 on but understanding what you are playing with is priceless.
when this engine hit the ground there was no training, no books out and noone knew a thing about them. it was a sad hands on learn as you toss parts program. Ford did so much better with the 6.4 launch just based on that, they have done even better with the 6.7
the 05 was not a bad year. the 06/07 are the best.
I've owned an 04 with no problems,And now own an 07 with no problems...Ok I take that back. The 07 was in the shop for a T-stat...BIG DEAL!
At work we have an 03 F-450 service truck that is used everyday besides in the winter.Sometimes it will sit for weeks without use. Some days that truck will have to idle for 8 hours with no high idle,The guys beat the **** out of it,They always shut it off hot,They go WOT when the motor is ICE cold,And it doesn't get near the maintance it should.I could go on and on about the stuff that that truck goes though...It's unbeleveable.Everything that you shouldn't do to a 6.0 is done to that truck. With that said,NOT A ONE PROBLEM.We also have an 06 F-350 DRW 6.0 pickup that isn't beat so bad,But does pull a 14,000 Lbs fith wheel trailer. This truck also doesn't get proper maintance eather...NO PROBLEMS.One more thing...My buddy has an 05,Very well maintained,NO PROBLEMS.Oh an almost for got another buddy has an 06 F-250 and his dad has an 05 EX...You wanna guess???Yep,NO PROBLEMS!!!
Moral of the story...I myself wouldn't worry about buying on 05.
