the clutch pedal in my 97 ranger 4.0 5speed disengages within 1/2 inch to 1 inch of full travel ( as in your foot isnt on it, driving down the road ) im figuring its just a fried clutch disc, but is there anything else it may be? ( i know i have had to kill its life teaching people how to drive a standard in that truck, plus pulling loads a truck like that was never meant to do)
could be any number or combination of things. Master cylinder, slave cylinder, clutch assy. Does it have any pressure or does it go down very easy. I am willing to bet the master is bad, check for leaks on the firewall inside under the carpet, outside under the brake cyl. If its the slave it could be an internal no leak situation. Check for leakage under the bellhousing/transmission.
If you dont find anything well it becomes a guessing game. 1st thing is to check the fluid resevoir, maybe bleed the system and see if that helps. If no help and you decide to tear the system apart to R&R cluth, go the whole route, master $40, slave $55 and clutch assy $200 for parts est..
no, its a firm pedal, it releases right at the top of travel, not acting like a bad master or slave ( i know the feeling, got a toyota that has that issue ) its just its WAY too touchy, as soon as you barely touch the pedal it disengages, if it was leaking it wouldnt disengage at all or would be hard disengaging, this is exact opposite
