Hey guys, I guess I've tracked my fuel leak down to a bad fuel pump, so I'm gonna swap it. Any advice for me before I start, this will be my first fuel pump swap on a diesel engine and I'm not entirely familiar with this engine. Thanks.

Unmodded, like my coffee
its pretty easy except for the banjo bolt. you will need a 1 1/4" 12 point box wrench and take it little by little. i unbolted my fuel bowl to make a little more room. it would pay to do the rubber lines while your in there. and make sure you dont loose the metal washers. one butts against the banjo bolt and the other goes against the pump. look for the marker on the balancer from the crankshaft. turn it with a 15/16 to where the mark is at about 11:00. this is to be sure that the pin on the bottom of the old pump doesnt fall into the block. and unbolt the pump before hand so it can lift up slightly. it make take some work to get it out if the oring is swelled alot but it will come out. put a tiny bit of oil on the new ring before putting the new pump in. when you bolt the new one in with will turn the engine on its own. and def unhook the batts. there is no way to do this without at least touching the gpr and you dont want to be welding lol. just time and patience. i hope this helps
indeed you do, you take off the main feed line which is about 4 inches long and if you dont drain the bowl then it goes allll over the motor, wooo.... lol so yes, drain that pig.
Well, I only had one of the washers, the one on the bolt side. I tried 2 of the local ford dealerships, and the international dealership, neither had them and the ford dealerships didn't even have part numbers for them. tried the local auto parts places, no dice either. I do not know what I am gonna do to replace them. Also, as an interesting side note, I found a small rubber gasket in the sludge under the fuel bowl, it ended up belonging on the side where the screen is. If anybody has some ideas on where I can get the copper gaskets for the banjo bolt, please let me know.
double check on the pump and back of the lines. you may have already but just be sure it aint stuck on something ore you didnt drop it. i had mine stuck and though i had one then dropped it in the valley and didnt realize it till i was almost done.
I just did mine yesterday, and all I can say is be sure you're not in a hurry to reattach the banjo nut. My hands still hurt. One pleasant surprise was not having to bleed any fuel lines as I used to have to on Cummins motors.
all I would add is check fit the banjo bolt to the new pump before you install it. just to make sure it goes in smoothly. I did mine twice because the threads in the new pump were damaged and after about 15 minutes of turning it little by little, it hung up on the damaged thread and wouldnt tighten any further, requiring some choice words and phrases. and removal of the new pump.
