Hi guys looking for info pics help on big trucks I have a 53 duelwheel truck apart from a small amount of rust in the cab corners its in pritty good condition the grand plan is to keep the duel rear end and the big gards on the front ive picked up some rear step side gards and plan to build a oversize stepside bed Im thinking about 9ft long, being longer will probely need to be a bit higher to look right. one problem I can see is the duel wheels do I try to make the rear gards wider or cut the inside wheel through the side of the tray? has any one out there done this before. any help, pics, info on big trucks would be grate thanks dave
nice job, havi. dave, there are some scanned photos of that bed being fabbed in my gallery. if you look close, you will see that fenders are actually sectioned to fit single wheels. fenders were one piece steel for duals.
How big of a truck? The F-350 verse an F-900 would effect how you'd have to go about the bed.
I'm building a '56 F-600. I plan on swapping out to 4x4 axles but still keeping the 38" size tires (I'd need different wheels)
The biggest problem you'll find is the lenght of the wheel base. I'm not sure what size truck you have, but my '56 has a wheel base of 154", thats 3 feet longer than an F-250. The problem that this causes is if I keep that as is, on a 10' bed or whatever, the fenders would be all the way in the back and the front of the bed would look very stretched.
You'll want to make a custom bed, or at least use something other than the f100 beds. From 73-79 the short beds for those years have the same height and width as earlier long beds. But making one isn't too hard, probably cost a couple hundred in steel plus the fenders.
There are some options with it, this guy used a modern bed:
This COE also has an extended cab (custom), this tends to make up for that 3' wheel base difference. Imagine how long and funny that bed would look like without it and stretched all the way to a normal cab lenght:
Most bigger trucks have taller beds, it looks way funny "normal" height;
This truck is a dually, don't know much more on it though;
