Engine Questions

Okay guys,
I got some questions regarding engines in my truck. My 300 is about beat to the last drop I think so this spring I'll be swapping it out. All I keep reading is that the 302 is a pooch? My uncle will be building it. Mildly though, not huge. Will it be that dissappointment? It is my understanding that the winsdor gets horrible gas mileage for its size and I need as much gas as I can get as my 300 is getting 6-8 in 4 wheel drive right now. Another thing, where would be the best place to get a good block to start? Like what year of truck/car and such. And what is the best auto tranny? Thanks for the help!

As far as my experience goes the 300-I6 was a gas hog. At least with a 302 you can go with a 4BBL, which "if your not a lead foot" will give you somewhat better gas mileage due to the smaller primary jets. As far as the block goes there is a book "Ford Performance Parts Interchange" if I rember correctly which gives great info on Windsor and FE blocks.
One thing for the 300-I6 was torque, and lots of it.

Engine Questions

Hello Austin,

Why not just do a rebuild on the Six? Clifford makes a 4v intake, RV cam (torque), headers are available, just saw new pistons on eBay for $66 (complete set!)....
According to most factory numbers the 300-6 makes better torque than a 302 (in stock form). Torque is what your after in a 4wd!! Your mileage may have more to do with worn out engine than anything else.

You also have to consider your trans/transfer case in all this. Is your truck manual or auto? If it's an original 4wd it's probably got a manual & divorced (separate) transfer case. * Changing out the trans adds a whole new dimension of excitement to all this... literally. Changing trans could mean moving transfer case (case x-member!) and new driveshafts. Changing driveshafts any noticable amount also changes pinion angles. Incorrect pinion angle leads to vibration and short lifespan u-joints. * Keeping trans and changing engine requires the right bell housing. The 302 and 351W share the same bolt pattern as the 300. The 351c/m and the 429/460 share patterns. The FE's 352,390,428 have two different patterns (early 60's vs mid 60's and beyond).

My point in all this..... How deep are planning to go, both into your pockets and your trucks guts?

Jim

Austin, I don't care for the I6 at all, but you should be getting better gas milage than that. I do with my big ol FE. A lot of guys love the 350 cfm 4 barrel/header setup on the I6. They say it makes them a lot more powerful than the small V8s. (But you gotta like the I6 to start with)

Engine Questions

John take a look at his tire size and axle ratios! It don't matter what engine you put in that thing in 4 WD your going to **** through a tank a day easyly.

Me I liked my six but I love my 302.
The 302 started its life in my 69 Bronco.
Bumped comp ratio to 9.5:1 mild cam with split lift and duration. Kepped the smaller 2 brl heads and manifoild with nothing fancy just a five angle valve job and hi volume oil pump, headers.
In the bronco with 4:10's and 33x10.5x15 I'd get 12 mpg with points and a MSD 6a. Now it's in my 65 with 3:53 and 235x75x15 and i get 17mpg towing my racecar (1500lbs)

Smaller runners in the heads keep flow velocity up so low end is there. The two brl motorcraft/autolite carb works great even on steep inclines.

Engine Questions

Thanks for all the replys guys. The horsepower isn't much of an issue I don't think because I talked to him and he's gonna do all the machining to the heads himself b/c he used to work for a place so I get off easy there. All I need to know now is what would be the best tranny? And where should I look for a block at to start with?

Thanks again!

sorry it took so long to respond...my comp is wack.
