Which Axle?
In the next two months I plan to buy a STX Supercab, 4X4 with a 4.6 2-valve V8 (my 1993 Ranger with 196K miles is getting tired). What confuses me are the various axle ratios that are available. Most of the trucks I've seen online in my area are offered with the 3.55 or 3.73 ratio regular axles. My daily commute is only 7 miles, and a couple of times a year I trailer my 17ft Boston Whaler (which my Ranger has had no problem pulling). Could someone please explain which axle ratio would be best in my situation, and whether I need limited slip? Thanks in advance.

3.55 will keep your RPMS lower and will provide better overall MPG.
3.73 will provide a better hole shot (lower RPMS) and towing.
LS will help on slippery roads (mud, gravel, snow).
Since you're getting the 4.6L and 4x4, I would get the 3.73LS.

Definitely go with the 3.73 if youre towing anything. The limited slip is a nice option to have too. I would recommend getting the factory tow package so you dont have to add an ugly aftermarket hitch and at $350.00 its a bargain.

Any 4x4 should get at minimum a LS rear diff.(locker is prefered) As far as gears, if your Ranger towed your boat ok, even the anemic (though bullet proof) 4.6 2v should be ok with 3.55 rear. You could probably even get away with 3.31 if you don't live near too many hills. Seeing as how this will be a daily driver primarily, 3.73 wouldn't be too bad on mileage, but I don't think you really need them.
