i have a 302 i put in a truck i set the timing and put gas in it and it will not start it acts like it want to but it wont, i tested the compression and it 120 out of each cylinder, i tested the spark and i have spark, i checked the fuel and i have fuel i put a different carb on and still nothing. i had it running for a day and all i did was changed the oil and then i went to start it and it ran for about 10 seconds and this is where i stand at any one with advise.
Check the wire in the plastic clip that goes to the coil. They plastic cracks and will not always make a good connection. I replaced mine and no longer have the problem.
It certainly sounds as if the timing is off. Pull #1 spark plug, and roll it up to top dead center. Then see where the rotor is pointing. If it's not pointed almost directly at the #1 plug wire terminal, make it do so, and try to start it then.
check your cap and rotor to see if they are corroded or out of spec, also do these trucks have a ballast resistor in the ignition, only had one 80's truck and non of it was stock
i will have to check it in the morning but what really doesnt make since to me is that i had it running for a complete day then i changed the oil and there was nothing if the timing was off seems like it wouldnt never started but ill try timing it again, i didnt know if possible if there was a brain box or something that went bad thanks
D'OH! Almost forgot the simplest check. Lift the cap up, and bump the solenoid to spin the starter, see if the rotor spins. The plastic teeth on the timing gear can fail with no warning whatsoever.
how old is this motor (points?) i had an old distributer that had a bushing that went bad and my ignition was all over the place (mallory is a great fix)
