Truck Help

I am looking at this truck in Houston and wanted to see what you guys thought.

2001 Ford F250 $11,980 - Autos-Mobiles - Houston, TX 77055 Dealer

It looks like it is in nice shape. 1 owner low mileage. I can't figure out the cost though. If you look at these trucks you cand find prices from 5000 to 20000 dollars.

The auto check report looks ok. It ranked at 91 and the average is 74 to 85. They picked it up at an auction which makes me a little uncomfortable, but i don't know why. There is no history on the truck from 2/5/2001 to 3/10/2010.
Any one in Texas have experience with the dealer?

Thoughts?

i dont understand how they come up with the rankings but a socre of 91 sounds good. it says there are 9 records but i cant see what they are. im guessing the put the spray in liner to cover up normal scratches and rust....i would check the underside of the bed. looks like doors, hood, bumpers all line up well so maybe no accidents? windshield looks scratched...could be dirty but the rest of the truck has been cleaned so im sure the windshield is clean also...with the looks of the windshield and so few miles it could have been driven in some pretty dusty conditions...if air filter was not taken care of turbo could be dusted.

its never had the recalls so guessing thats a good thing

I wouldn't buy it because of the crummy seats myself. But other than that looks pretty clean.

Oasis report

I will definitely take that buyers guide with me but because its over 800 miles away I am trying to get everything i can in order.

I got an oasis report and it looked ok. it has no warranty repairs and 07s57 (cam shaft positioning sensor) and 09s09 (speed control system) outstanding. Any flags there?

I am not too worried about the seats because of what i will be using the truck for. Its not a DD more of a get dirty hauler.

I will see if they will send me pictures of the underside of the truck. Thanks for the advice.

Anything else i should check or do?

Those 2 recalls are pretty minor, no big deal there.

Just so you know the build date of 10-00 is when they used the mechanical diode in the tranny. That is in the middle of tranny build date 7/27/2000 to 3/23/2001. If it is the stock tranny it has the mechanical diode.

i am assuming that is bad because it is hard to get to. What are the other implications?

It WILL fail, and when it does you get to buy a new transmission.

so is that the case with all 99 to March 2001?

Is there a preventative fix that you can do?

So if i want a 7.3 to avoid the tranny issue i would have to buy a manual or a March 2001 to when they change to the 6.0 in 2003???

and trannies are 2 to 3 grand... fun stuff...

Not sure what to do with that, good 7.3's are pretty tough to find right now

Also its missing the big tow hooks on the front. I am going to put a good amount of steel up there anyway for a front mount hitch. Are those just removable or is that a bid deal? Are they expensive for new ones?

it's bad because it's prone to failure, a failure requires a complete rebuild of the tranny.

ford did away with the mechanical diode build date 3/23/01 and if you get the tranny rebuilt or it has been rebuilt it will not have the mechanical diode.

figure 3 to 4K for a tranny rebuild but if you are gonna tow big look in to a BTS (brian's truck shop) or JW (john woods) and you will never regret it. They build some of the best, longest living best supported (customer support) tannnys for out trucks.

edit: My tranny lived 230,000+ miles before it went....the failure wasn't the mechanical diode but I don't tow heavy more than a few times a year and the diode is know to be a ticking time bomb.

No, the diode trans was only in place for a short time. The tow hooks missing is no big deal, I'd guess you could get them for a decent price at a salvage yard.

So is this a preventative solution that you are referring to, or do they do entire transmissions?

The valve body will not help with the diode failure.

So knowing the tranny has that particfular diode and the rest of the truck looks good, is the truck not worth buying?
