You are correct in that is is 6.39 liters but on the fender badges used by Mercury on the Couger I 'remember' seeing it as '6.5 Liters'. This is not technicly(sp) correct. But when it comes to fender badges Ford never was too exact.
300 I6 is listed as 4.9L
302 V8 is listed as 5.0L
Where as 305+ Cubic inches is 5 liters and both a 302 and a 300 are close enough to be rounded down to 4.9L. So Ford calls one engine one size and the other the next size up.
Pontiac called their 400V8 a 6.6L on their Firebirds.

Cool I just wanted to check so for a ford truck would ford have said 6.4 or 6.5 i,ve always concidered mercs to be more of a "shined up" ford so maybe this was an attempt to make the higher priced merc ''better'' ?

Who knows what Ford would have called it. Ford didn't call the 302 a 5.0L until,.... what?, 1979 when the Fox chassis came out for the Mustang?
A bit Off Topic: When Nascar put a 7.0L limit on engine sizes Ford got away with running the 429 Boss engine and it is .030 over the limit. Now it is 358 Cid. Not even an even Liter size (5.866).
