Getting a pic of the box and how I built it would be a PIA seeing as it is all installed. I will see if I can get some pics the next time the truck is at the shop and on the rack for an oil change. (which needs to be done ASAP)
Basically I just made each stick operate a shift rod by itself. It took some time with the shift box all tore apart to figure it out but only about 2 hours time start to finish.
The detents were a bit more complicated but easy once I started and got over trying to engineer it first.
Just a thought if your shifter is that hard to use, 90 percent of the time it is caused from years of oil, grease, dirt etc accumulating in it, if it is cleaning up and lubeing it makes it way smoother. if it is as touchy as you describe I would be afraid to rig something because it may be only half in gear and cause expensive problems rather quickly. Do you have a 205 or 203 Tcase.
I know I have to do this, and I'm sure it would help, but how much disassembly is required? The Haynes manual is really vague. It's my only vehicle for the time being, so if anything can't get done in an afternoon, it ain't happening for a while.
Can I just crawl underneath with a power washer and a can of spray lithium grease as a step in the right direction? Or will I end up driving grit even deeper into places it shouldn't be?
Don't actually know which tcase I have, will try to figure this out later today.
Even if I get it working perfectly, I'm still gonna play around with this idea, if only because it'll let me keep my eyes on the road when the dog's riding with me.
Mines been slipping into neutral, but after examining the way my shifter is, and taking off the t-case shifter boot and looking down while I moved it, I noticed it's pretty loosesly bolted into the T-case via the pivot point, may be the same case with you, mines a bit crunchy as well.
You can pull the shifter out and clean it up at your leisure just leave the tcase in gear and you can still drive it. the tcase doesn't care if the shifter is in it or not.

I'm going to be taking mine out to sand and repaint, it's a good chance for me to figure out if it is my shifter being loose or if it is the transfer case.
