Here is the delimma my Dad is in. He has an 05 F-350 6.0 lariat. He just got rear ended at a stop light a few weeks ago by a mac truck doing 40 mph. He is fine, but the same cannot be said for the truck. Today the adjuster told him it was totaled. Now he lives in a 5th wheel, and travels often, so a truck is a necessity. He is trying to decide between buying a 2010, waiting for a 2011 for the new 6.7, or buying a pre 08 model.
What is your guys' opinion on this one? Did they get all the corks worked out of the 6.4? Would it be a reliable stout engine? Or would he be better off waiting and taking his chances with the new 6.7? I think he prefers new over used, but he isn't totally against the idea.
I am bias towards the new 6.7 just because from what i've read it sounds pretty intense, and I don't think Ford wants to keep changing motors and I have a feeling this one will stick...I could be wayyyy off.
Shout out your opinions!
2011 Bigger and Badder than ever. Improvements galore! Yeah let's have a 2011 party........Oh ya.......Uncle EPA came and said he needs to make some of his own mandated improvements under the hood!
I'd pass on the 2011 if going Diesel! I love new trucks and toys. I have an 09' loaded with every available......but
..........the problem is harsher EPA requirments! The 6.7 looks promising but it is a new block. An all new block. Not to mention wrapped into that block is Uncle EPA's new standards including a Urea injection system. Love the newer trucks but I hate the EPA standards.
Maybe if technology could keep up with Washington's mandates we would have a better diesel truck. We have better trucks......stronger......bigger....better........ including transmissions........but engines and exhausts......well they are "cleaner".........and......ummmmmmm...........
I am glad to see a six speed. It's about time Ford found the extra gear!
The 6.4L MPG problem can be fixed with a DPF delete. Otherwise it is a good engine. When combined with either transmission option you have a very capable and reliable towing platform.
2011? We're seeing impressive numbers, both in power and mileage. Time will tell if the engines and transmission are reliable. That is the big gamble.
Don't know if it's a consideration for him, but I would think you're going to be getting rebates on the 2010's. Not so the new model, at least not when they are first introduced.
Another option: Get a used but very well cared for 7.3 (lots out there if you are willing to hunt) and drive it for a couple years.
Conservatively invest the money saved over buying new (and there will be a LOT!) and wait for the verdict on the 6.7. If it turns out to be a winner, sell the 7.3 and buy a 6.7.
The depreciation on the 7.3 will almost certainly be less than the return on the investment! And if he then buys a year or two old 6.7, the net savings will be huge.
Much less risk, and a little less (or maybe a lot less) cost.
One other option (if he's not obsessed with the diesel thing) is to get a used V-10. There are indicators that the value on these may actually increase over the next few years. If the 6.7 turns out to be not so good, maybe quite a bit.
That would be tough to decide on and there will probably be a lot of personal opinions, that being said...I personally would rule the 7.3 out only because their getting long in the tooth(7+ years) not so much the engine everything around the engine.
A few schools of thought ...
1- Ford seems to have put their reputation on line with the new diesel, roll the dice be a guinea pig and hope only the small job 1 growing pains are there.
2- Buy a used 6.4 use the experience of previous owners, mod it and throw the warranty out the window. Plus you get the better Trans, brakes tow command etc. that the 7.3 didn't have.
3-Pick up a used 6.0 let the 6.7 get the bugs worked out and trade it(or sell it) then get the newer DSL.

I think v10s in the 250 and 350 are going to increase anyway given that your only going to be able to get v10s in the 450 and 550 chassis configurations from 2011 on(or atleast in the near future).
