hey guys i want to paint a few items on my new truck black. it came with chrome nerf bars and exhaust tips. anyone have any good ideas on how to prep for paint?
I've had chrome stripped off at a plating shop before and while it is the best way to go, I have also seen chrome wheel centers painted on the "Overhaulin" TV show. To me it looked like they just scuffed the chrome and painted, but if I were you I'd ask the counter guy at a GOOD automotive paint store.
I did a set of chrome spoke wheel centers for a friend more than 20 years ago and they still look good.(i see the truck every now and then) all i did was hit the chrome with 240 grit and apply the paint, no primer, no sealer or anything! just automotive single stage paint to match his 78 f100. Man! i miss my friend Gary, he died 20 years ago march 11th while out riding dirt bikes with another friend.
considering that stuff is all gonna get pounded with stones off the wheels if your gonna paint them give em a quick hit with a sandblaster it will pit the plating pretty deep and the paint will bit in real good ..
For what you have a good sandblasting followed by a good self etching primer then paint is the way I would go. Te guy on MuscleCar showed how to paint over chrome last year. I forget his process, but it came out looking good. The important thing to remember is paint is only as good as the surface it is applied to and how it is preped.
I cleaned up a set of Cagar SS wheels and painted the centers. I used 150 grit on a mouse sander and painted with Dupli Color wheel paint and Clear Coat for wheels. Pictures are on my gallery.
