I need to pull the steering wheel on my 94 F350 to try to
repair the turn signals. I have a set of steering wheel pullers but
I don't know how to get all the plastic out of the way. What's the
sequence to get to the nut or is there some way to get the
turn signal system off without removing the wheel?
I pulled up gently on the horn button but it did not seem to give.
Should be two screws on the backside of the steering wheel. get those out and then lightly pull the horn button out. there will be a couple of wires and a connector. remove that and get it out of the way. That should give you access to the nut. remove the nut and then you can use your puller. once the wheel is out of the way you should see the turn signal. usually white and plastic with a bunch of wires. are you just replacing the switch?
I don't know what I'll have to do to it until I get into it and see what's broken.
I looked for screws from behind the wheel but didn't see any. I'm going to drive out to the truck if the rain stops today and take a couple of pictures of the front and back of the wheel area. Then, maybe someone can tell me where those screws are.
They are kind of hidden in the back of the wheel 'spokes' in recesses. I can't recall if they are torx or phillips screws. I want to say they are roughly middle between the hub of the wheel and the outer rim. Feel around, they are there, they are even hard to see because it's hard to get an angle to see the wheel well from behind, at least while installed in the truck.
I just replaced mine a month ago if there are screws mine did not have them it is a 92 i just pulled out horn with alittle help from screwdriver unpluged the conector. If you are replaceing switch you have to pull wheel there are if i remember wright a couple screws in the switch then it pulls out toward you thats why you have to pull the wheel. Is it broke or just chasing a problem.
It's probably broke. It works great on left turn but won't snap in on right turn. While I'm at the truck, I'll look again for the screws and take a pic or two if I can't find the screws.
I wonder, did the steering wheel change with the interior change in '92? I didn't pick up on the year of your truck, but that may be the reason for it being different.
I've got pic's of my wheel. How do I insert them into this thread? It says I may not post attachments. I assume a pic is an attachment. My truck is a 1994.
Boy that was tough. I think I succeeded in getting the pic's of the steering wheel and collumn into PhotoBucket. It should be located in My Home All Albums Steering or maybe My Home All Albums toolmanx's default album. I'm not sure which. Let me know if you can see them.
once you pull your steering wheel there will be a collar on the steering column it has ***** on it that turn your signal off as the wheel turns. study whats there and its easy to figure out. i had the same problem. it turned out to be the collar. mine had two tiny metal dowels sticking up toward the drivers seat that clicked the signal return.
My problem is I can't figure out how to get the horn button out of the way to get to the wheel nut. If you look at the pic's, there is a lot of wide plastic shrouds around the back of the wheel area. I tried gently prying up on the horn button but I don't want to break it. There must be some instruction somewhere that tells how to pull this particular wheel. I don't mind puttting some serious pry on the button if that is how it is removed but if there is some other correct way, the button could be damaged.
Are you replacing the turn signal switch or trying to get to the ring that trips the return mechanism? The plastic shroud is held on with 3-4 phillips head screw and the ignition lock cylinder will also have to be remove to get it completely off. Removing the screws will allow you to remove half of the shroud. The switch can be replaced without removing the wheel, I changed my switch 3 times in one day. If you need the ring around the column, then keep going.
There is a good chance it is just the switch. I won't know till I can get to all of it. How do you remove the ignition switch? I imagine that won't be easy either. I still need to know how to get that horn shroud with the horn button in it off. The lower half of the shroud is not there. It didn't come with the truck. It's the top half that contains the horn button and I don't see any screws that hold it.
I believe all you need to do is remove the lock cylinder to get the rest of the shroud off. There should be a hole in the case near the lock cylinder. Turn the ignition to the "ON' position(disconnect battery first), insert a small wire into the hole to press the retaining pin and then pull the cylinder out.
