I have a 1985 f150 with a straight six. Recently I had the carburetor replaced.
It runs great, but when I turn the truck off it either chugs for a little while and then cuts off or it backfires.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Dieseling, aka run-on. I've caused this by mis-adjusting the idle mixture on the carb
combined with mis-adjusted timing, both while trying to pass emissions tests. Some
engines have a solenoid that 100% closes the throttle plate when the engine is shut off,
thereby forcefully avoiding this problem.
before you damage a rod bearing or piston pin in it..
if its not already happened...
putting a electric solenoid on it would be great, they were meant ot step up the idle speed when a/c was on, but you can use them to hold the idle speed when key is on, and then let the throttle shut completely when you shut if off
GM has these also and i used them all the time on my old chevies
works great to kill the engine quickly when you shut it off..
X2 on the timing. You may also have some gunk built up inside the cylinders which is getting hot enough to keep igniting the fuel for a short time. You may want to try something like seafoam to try and knock some of that gunk out.
