Sorry, new to all this truck stuff, borrowed my buddies Ford tuck and hate my little ford car now.....tiny! Anyways great forum guys, been poking abound for 2 days.
Back to the subject bought an 85 f250 for $500 and tryin to make a nice hunting/fishin/playin truck out of her, the only problem is that there isn't reverse, is just grinds real bad. Tried starting it in reverse and it does not like that. I'm prepared to do a transmission swap on it but don't know what is swappable. Got a straight 6, Borg Transfer (if that matters) and the transmission code in the door is F. The tag on the tranny is F1TA-GB A342275.....just wanting to know my options....
After hours of searching I think its the mazda 5 sp. Couldn't find the code F anywhere on the internet....who knows what they have done to this truck....
I'm not sure what bellhousing is the same as the 240/300, I believe they used C6's (auto), E40D (manual), and the M50D (manual mazda), which I think you were describing.
Ok the 240/300's have the same bolt pattern as the small block V8's, so any transmission off a 289,302,351 will work on it. I believe it needs to be 65 or newer. I don't know much about manual transmissions so I have no idea which ones will work, but automatics would be C4, C6, and the AOD's
Is it a 4 or 5 speed? I did not think the Mazdas made it into the F250 in 1985. I would guess it is a 4 speed if factory - those did not have a synchronized reverse. If you do swap it, I would consider swapping in an NP435/T18/T19. Each has a compound low and are stout trannies. Easc were also offered factory in these trucks, so they should be an easy swap.
Any transmission with an SBF bell housing will work. The 300 (I6) came with AOD E40D and mazda 5speed. Dunno if there were any others as i'm fairly new as well.
You could use a transmission out of any 240/300 truck. Also 302 and 351W will work (not the 351M though). Hope this helps.
