I have a 78 F250 4wd regular cab long bed. Can I use a cab off a 77 F150 2wd and have everything work and bolt up ok? My truck is an auto and the 77 cab was a standard shift. What all do I need to do to make it work? Thanks.
The 4wd cab will have a removable cover in the floor over the transmission and transfer case. This will bolt into your 2wd floor once you have cut the hole for the t-case shifter. The outline of the cover as well as the bolt locations are already stamped in the floor of the 2wd cab. You will be able to remove the clutch pedal from the steering column support as well as switching the brake pedal to the wider one for the auto trans. You should have a rubber plug/boot in the bottom of your auto cab near the accelerator pedal that will plug the same hole for the clutch linkage in your standard shift cab. You will have to swap your steering column as well which is a half dozen bolts in total. I just completed this same swap and that was all I had to do.
Thanks for all the info. I just removed my bed tonight and got to look at the cab a little closer. All it really needs is a cab corner and floors. The back, the roof, pillers, glass, dash and rockers are all solid. maybe it'll be a better idea to just save my cab. Do they sell complete floor pans? I know they sell individual sides.
look in JC whithney or LMC trucks for your floor pans. Depending on how bad the rust is, I have just cut some good stout tin and screwed it in, the cover it with insulation and the carpet. You will never know the difference
Theres a few holes on the drivers side floor near the hi beam switch. There is also a rather large hole behind the drivers side seat between the holes for the seat bolts and the seat belt bolt. Under the cab there is a hole on the other side of that one, about the same size. The passenger side has already been patched. There is also a hole on the drivers side door jam down near the headlight switch. Cab corners need done too. I'm thinking a cab swap would be best but I'm not sure if doing so would make it an r title or not. I'm guessing you just swap the tags above the air cleaner and hope for the best? Lol any help or opinions would be appriciated.
In Saskatchewan my 1975 F350 had a cab replacement done with a 1979 Explorer before I bought it. The registration shows the vehicle as a 1979 F150..
I am about to replace the cab this month - so I will register as whatever the tags are in the replacement cab.
The earlier comments have given good direction on the exchange for transmssion considerations.
ANY rust seems a big problem, so for me a cab swap is the only solution.
Both front mounts are dissolved and the vehicle would be impounded if stopped by a highways department inspector.
The only item not mentioned so far are new cab mounts - to restore the ride and apparently alignment.
