I'm wondering what MPG others are getting with the 6.4L diesel/auto on the highway. I have a 2008 that only got 14.0mpg on a 1400 mile highway ride.
I guess I averaged about 70mph with less than 750lbs in the back.
I dont have one, but I happend to see one at the fuel pump the other day.
Just for laughs I asked the owner if he wanted to trade.
His response was " if it yours gets better than 11mpg I will "
He said it only had 6400 miles on it, so it was still breaking in.
Hes was looking to delete the DPF already, but didn't want to kill the warranty.
My truck has the 3.73 rear and just 3400 miles on it.
The display on the odometer was reading 14.9 mpg when I started the first extended trip in the truck. This was all short trip driving. I thought the mpg would go up instead of down on a long trip.
When I've checked the mpg on my '99 7.3 I was at about 17mpg.
I was hoping the new motor and more speeds on the trans would return better mpg.

yeh... more pollution control has cut the possible MPG a bunch..
the 2011 setup goes to a 6 speed tranny to try to get some of that back,, and an available 3.31 rear gear too!.. so they have squeezed everything out of the engine they can.. maybe small tweaks.. 1/2 mpg here or there.. but no way to find 20% better (14 -> 17)..
DPF is the biggest single item I think, using fuel to burn off the carbon smoke particles during the regen cycle. some have seen impressive MPG gains, but the systems cost $1500.. so take some time to cost recover AND void your warranty. And, in some states removal MAY get you extra presents from the police and inspection system reps..
Our 6.4 at work gets 11mpg freeway, unloaded. But it doesn't seem to drop a whole lot even if it's towing the large flatbed trailer we often use, but then again with 11mpg empty, how much worse could it get?

yeh.. my suburban gets 14 empty on the hiway, and 6.5 towing my 7k trailer. (over 3500 miles)
the SD gets about 14 empty and 11 towing the 7k trailer. (over 500 miles so far) (I was hoping/dreaming for 16 & 10, so 14 & 11 is close)
We have two 2010 F250's w/the 6.4L engines. My wifes is a King Ranch, and tank to tank, not using the tell-tale, averages 14.3 mpg overall. Mine is the Lariat with all of the options, but I am a much more conservative driver, and I average 16.8 mpg. Most of mine is freeway so that has a big bearing. The computer shows as high as 19.2, but actual fill-ups put me at the 16.8 number. I keep records of everything, kind of **** about that, so I know absolutely that is where the trucks are.
I should also add that when I drive her truck, I cannot come close to the same mileage that I get driving mine, so clearly a difference in the trucks. Hers built in September 2009, mine in late December, that might account for part of the mileage difference.

what are the axle ratios? see the tag on the door column post.lowest line, under 'axle'.. mine is a 4N
4N is a 4.10, so about 10% worse than the 3.73. (ratio diff is 9%, 3.73/4.10)
The 750 lbs he had in the bed is a not quite 3 tons, that would be 7,500 lbs
My flatbed weights 10000 lb. Last week I drove 320 miles with 7000 lb forklift on the bed. Didn't notice mpg change. Actually it was higher on the interstate freeway, that when I drive empty on Bay Area freeways.
Both have 3.73 ratios. They are basically the same trucks sans the basic creature comforts etc. One thing that I have noticed (that I failed to mention), is her truck seems to have more git-up-n-go than mine, faster off the line etc. Better acceleration getting on the freeway etc., but I am not knowledgable enough about these trucks to offer anything other than that, a basic observation.

If you added 7000 lbs to your truck in cargo and actually got better mileage then you have one wonderful truck, and there's just not a whole lot of anything left to say about that. Congratulations.
