I've just finished replacing my steering column - a straight, non-tilt one - with a tilt column. It took about 2 hours to get the old one out and one hour to put the replacement in. The old one was from my '91 Ranger while the new one came from a '94 Explorer - it was a good fit.
Then I thought about swapping the ignition lock from the old one into the "new" one. The old one came out just like the Ford Service Manual said. The problem is that I can't get the lock to release from the "new" '94. They look the same with the hole to insert a prod to get it to release.
Is there something else that needs to be done to get the '94 lock to release? Both lock have the correct keys.
Michigan66, did you try going to both positions with the key and pushing in while wiggling the key and holding the pin in? Either acc or on. Does it feel like the pin is going in when pushed? Some times that retainer pin sticks and doesn't want to go in like it should. I'm not sure if they changed the key cylinder removal position for the 94 Explorer or not. But it should be the same as your 91.
According to the Ford service guy, the locks are completely different. They will not interchange and the '94 uses a different removal procedure. Funny, the casting that hold the lock looks the same.
If the '94 is anything like my '95 (and I'm pretty sure it is...), all you should have to do is turn the key to "run," push in the pin, and the cylinder should slide right out. With the tilt column, I'm not exactly sure, but it should be really really close to the same procedure.
