If you do much driving with the 460 or 454 pulling that trailer, gas is going to eat you alive.
An IP and turbo system will cost less that your gas bill will for a year.
I drive it about 3-4000 miles per year pulling a 25 ft trailer 100% of the time.It gets 10.5-11 mpg with an empty trailer and 6.5 to 7 mpg loaded at 40-50 mph on level ground. Its always clear to the floor in 4th gear.
I would love to compare mine to another IDI around here but I'm the only one that still has one that pulls a trailer.Several friends had new IDI's years ago and said that they were great trucks but didnt have the horses for heavy towing.
A new pump and turbo will run me $3000 which is more than the truck is worth plus I cant keep rear axle seals in it.I have had no luck finding a used turbo.
Most of the guys around here get 6-7 mpg loaded with their 460's and 454's if they stay at 55-60 .If they run 60-70 they get 5-6 mpg.
if you put all new injectors in it it has probably weakened the ip because the injectors are popping at a higher pressure than before in turn stressing the ip.ill bet if you swapped in a new ip advanced the timing and turned up the fuel you would be amazed.you said before that you noticed no difference after installing new injectors, that sure dont sound right.your the first person that i have heard say that.i kinda wonder if you got bad injectors

there is definatly some thing wrong with your truck i have a 93 f350 dually with auto trans and 410 gears and non turbo and i can tow 8000 up hill and still get 12 miles per gallon and can go 55-60 mph
Well I feel a little better today. I pulled the mule to the hunting land today and was pretty disgusted when I got there but then I hooked to a 24ft gooseneck with 2 four wheelers and a tripod stand on it and it felt about the same. I dont know what the trailer weighs but im guessing 3000-3500lb? I could keep a steady 55-60 but it was working. The bad part is I only got 150 miles before I had to switch tanks. I'll have to check when 5 fill up but I think it got about 10mpg.
Would yall advise getting a new IP when I put on my turbo? And how big of a difference can I expect from alll that?
Change the IP for now, and see the differents. Maybe you'll be happy without a turbo. If not, then turbo it. Alot of guys here come across some sweet deals on ebay for used setups. I have no idea for pricing, I never looked for any turbo.
There is one in the fte classifieds now and last week diesel kid was wanting to sell his.
These things sucked as far as pulling went when they were new until you put an exhaust system on them. ford castrated them and it hurts the mileage too.
wow seeing someone get 5-8 mpg while towing is just beyond me. In my truck i got 16mpg while towing my whole house in a 5000 pound open straight haul horse trailer. It was free to borrow opposed to the uhaul fees. It weighed in at almost13000 pounds, and i was going up steep grades that slow truckers to a crawl at about 40. That was before i got my new radiator and i thought i was going to kill the engine. So i kept it slow. Then i chopped up my exhaust and now i can go any speed up to my max with my loads of hay and pellet bedding that average around 6000 pounds. It shouldnt be that gutless, maybe it is because of my C6? Crazy issues going on with that truck bro.
the shop here in island that is close to me wants 650 for one and charge a 200 core. I about shat since you can find em online for 350 with almost no core and sometimes none.
I know the feeling far too well.My 1991 F-350 dually does poorly at towing. My empty 25 ft gooseneck that weighs 5000 lbs is almost a load for it.New injectors and fuel filters did nothing for it.At 167,000 miles I guess I should try advancing the timing or a new injection pump but I'm tired of spending money on it.I'm looking for a F-350 with a 460 or a Chevy 3500 with a 454.
To top it off I cant keep rear axle seals in my F-350.Its always leaking oil on the brakes so all I have is front brakes. It doesnt go and it wont whoa.
My stepfather has a Chevrolet 3500 dually extended cab 4x4 he's selling. It's a '94 with only 42k miles on it. Honestly it's a dog to tow with, but it's immaculate. I think all 454's are dogs to tow with.
