Lightbulb More Heat?

On these cold mich mornings lately the temp has been around 10 to 20 degrees. It takes forever for my 97 F250 460 to warm up. And when it does iut just gets between the "n" and the "o" in the normal portion of the guage. Even on full blast it is not very hot. Could I put a higher rated thermostat in? Any ideas?

More Heat?

Factory gauges are not very accurate, but...

my 94 F250 460 runs between the N and O(more on the N) on our high 20s to low 30s mornings. It will not reach that temp until I have been on the road at freeway speeds for about 5 miles. My heater at this range is not terribly hot until it has been on the road maybe 15 minutes. In the summer it will run more on the O.

I would guess this is the nature of the 460 beast.

You might do a radiator and heater core flush. I think the standard T'stat is about 190.

One other thing I am suspecting and which might be a problem for you is, that it seems like there is not as much airflow from the fan vents as I used to get say 3 years ago. I am wondering is maybe a vent door is sticking or some of the ducting has fallen out of place and all the air is dumping up inside the dash. One of these days I need to take a look, but my truck is such a pain under the dash.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

More Heat?

It's crazy but just about every Ford truck that I seen runs between the "N" and the "O" reguardless of the model of the truck or the size of the engine. It's always been the norm. It's the way they are set for the most part. I would be concirned if the needle was setting in a different part of the guage.
I do agree with the flush. You may even want to disconnect the heater core from the coolant heater hoses and connect a garden hose to it. Also, I would run another piece of hose from the core to a bucket. Run fresh water through it. This should clear any possible blockage in the core. Hope this helps. Jake.

Lightbulb More Heat?

I have a 92 F150 302 & a 89 bronco II that both put out plenty of heat. Last week we were 15 below zero. I back flushed the heaters when I change antifreeze. I have fairly new (2 years old) thermostats. I also insulated the heater hoses with pipe insulation from the local hard ware.Sometimes even back flushing does not get all the crud out so the heater should be replaced.
We are having a heat wave today in the mid 30s
