Still Won't Start

My 1998 F-150 4.6 2wd won't start. It cranks over but dosen't fire. If I spray starting fluid in it it tries to run and stalls out. I tried a new IAC but it did not help. Any Ideas?

Have you checked the COP's or state of the battery?

Maybe plugs?

Just throwing ideas out here.

I had 95 F-150 that did the same thing. After getting it started I had it looked at and it turned out to be a clogged fuel filter. Do you hear the fuel pump whine when you turn the key on. Keep us posted!

Obviously when you supplied it with something to burn, it ran!
Think fuel, think fuel, think fuel.
It's missing!

Thanks

I don't hear the fuel pump whine but I never did. I checked all the fuses under dash and under the hood thinking the fuel pump was dead but all were good. The truck was not crashed but is there a crash shut off switch somewhere in the truck? I thought I might need to reset it. Am I correct that I can check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I see a port on the fuel rail way in the back under the heater hoses. Haven't tried that yet. Thanks for your help.

There is a crash reset switch usually on front passenger side just inside the door. At least in my 95 that was where it was.Down where you put your feet. May have to remove panel to find it.

Im with remmons check the cutoff switch

but it could be a cam sensor or a fuel pump relay and maybe a fuel pump but i would look at the others first

Can Sensor

Where is the cam sensor? How do you test it? Today I'm going to check for fuel pressure. I beleive I can do that at the port on the fuel rail. The fuel filter is 4 years old with 80,000 miles on it. It,s time for a new one of those for sure. I'll keep you posted.

cam sensor is on the front drivers side of the timing cover just has a little plug on it.

Have you scanned for codes to see if there are any.

also just thought of something does the thieft light flash when you are cranking the truck. try a different pats key

Under normal circumastnces that fuel filter should be replaced at LEAST every 20,000 miles/or yearly.Regardless of what you do find as the ultimate culprit...CHANGE THAT FILTER!

Still Looking

OK Here's what I have so far. Tired a new IAC - No Help. Replaced the fuel filter. The existing filter was full of gas. I have fuel pressure in the fuel rail. When I press the schrader port on the fuel rail gas squirts out. The key is not chipped so the key would not be it. If I spray starting fluid in the intake it will run perfect untill the starting fluid runs out. I checked the crash switch. Passenger side to the right of your feet behind the side panel. The button is all the way in and I can't push it any further. If it gets fuel it will run. When I crank it there isn't even one cylinder firing. How do I get the fuel in it.
I really appreciate your help Thanks

If you have fuel pressure in the fuel rail,id say the injectors arent "firing".I would suspect that if the IAC were the culprit,it would likely fire, and run,but not idle.I seem to remember something about Mass airflow sensor,or something to that effect, but not sure if it applies here.
This could be a crank sensor issue as well. Wish I could shed some light on the subject, but it definately sounds like the injectors arent getting "triggered".Even if you had low fuel rail pressure I would think it would do something.

I agree, crank sensor would be my next guess. No codes, correct?

"I press the schrader port "
How much pressure on the fuel rail, pushing on the schrader valve without a pressure reading is not a test.

"Not one cylinder firing"
Have you verified you have spark to the plugs and used a noid light to make sure the injectors are working at least receiving the signal to fire?

Although not the best or safest way to do things, I have seen a tech pull the fuel rail with injectors attached on a 4cyl. and have the engine cranked so he could see what the injectors were doing, not sure this can be done on you truck though.

so you dont have a big black plastic ford key? its a smaller one?

the cam sensor that i mentioned earlier controls the injectors the crank sensor controls the spark.
one way to check the crank sensor is if you have a RPM gauge on the dash crank the truck if it reads rpms then the crank sensor is working.

but you said it would run if you pust gas in it then i would look at the cam sensor since you dont have pats on that truck
