The baffle thingy that's hanging off the driver's side exhaust manifold... It's got a lever on it and if I push it, it will push down. I remember seeing one of these with the y-pipe off on a vehicle and it was a baffle that opened as the truck warmed up.
How do I know if it's opening when the truck warms up?
The truck will wind out like a scalded dog but doesn't seem to want to move. It felt a lot like a clogged cat, but there's no cats - just straight pipes. So, I'm wondering if this thing is failing to open all the way.
I know it could be other things, but this is bothering me at this moment.
there should be a coil attached to the lever that opens it when it warms up. If that's there then just compare the hot/cold positions. If not I'd just try to wire the flap in the open position. I think the heat riser valves function is to restict one side of the exhaust when the engine is cold, making eexhaust flow under the carb through the intake, heating it and improving cold driveabilty. wiring it open would only effect performance at cold operating temps.
Well I finally compared the position of the lever from cold to warm. No change. But, I also read somewhere that the default position is open, which doesn't make sense to me.
I'm thinking it's stuck closed. I closed it with my hand (and a welding clove) when the truck was hot and running and it seems like I heard some sort of faint vacuum sound, but the engine itself didn't seem to change pitch.
Guess I'll wire it the 'other way' and see if it makes any difference.
