I drive a 1995 F150 5.8L Ext 4x4 shortbed. A while ago I was driving on the highway when all of the sudden I lost power and the truck started to make some sort of thumping noise. When i stopped on the shoulder the truck would not start. So i got it towed to the mechanic. It started right up for him, they ran a bunch of tests on it and thought nothing was wrong with it (maybe just a temporary blockage in the fuel line or something...). So they were going to pull the truck out for me and then it stalled again. They said they would need to replace the rear tank fuel pump which would have cost me around $800. I had almost a full rear tank so I drove on that tank until it was empty and i had no problems. I didnt have the money to fix it then, so ever since i have been just running off the front tank.
Does it sound like the fuel pump is what is causing the problems? And if so is it possible that somone like me (NO mechanical experience or knowledge whatsoever!) could replace it by themselves? I just dont want break anything else in the process of dropping the tank and what not...
If you can run off the front and not the back tank then it would be the pump (FDM) in the tank or the selector switch on the dash if the wiring is OK from the switch to the tank.
With a full tank you will need to get the gas out of it as it is very heavy or use a floor jack to lower it.
OR take the bed off.
You will also need a fuel line disconnect tool set along with the basic hand tools (screw drivers, 2 vice grips for turning the ring, hammer and so forth).
