motor swap

my 92 XLT 351w is gettin tired. (daily driver) 124k. Thinkin bout lookin 4 another motor to rebuild and swap out. What options do I have? Will any sb bolt up? What about the old 4.9? I've got overdrive on the shifter... so that tranny is the O40D?

Yes, to the 4.9! Either of the "smallblock" V8's and the 300 (4.9l) will bolt up. I'm in the midst of a 302-300 swap in a 93 right now. Two fewer cylinders and two fewer cubes and I'll be in better shape than before! The auto is the E4OD. Monster of a transmission (physical dimensions) with less than admirable service record but some folks still swear by them. Personally, I'm scrapping mine in favor of a 5-speed.

Yep. '92 F-150 with a 4.9 and M5 trans. will be donating her "heart and soul" to the '93 Bronco. But not to worry, the plan is to give the 302 and E4OD from the Bronco to the F-150 in exchange.

Ive got a 91 bronco with a tired 351w. Ive got another 351w that i can put in it, but im wondering about the transmission. Ive got an e4od and frankly, im not a fan.

are there any other transmissions that are swappable and that will bolt up to the 351w and allow me to still keep the 4x4?

I think the biggest problem with e4od's is that 80% of people have a bronco with bigger tires, stock gears, and a heavy right foot. And of course we all go offroad or snow bogging or something. And really how many people service there trans? The e4od is the same trans that is behind the diesels. I worked at a trans shop for 3 years and the majority of the e4ods that came in were being used to pull huge trailers, 5th wheels ect.
I'd say that 95% of us bought our trucks used and have probobly had 2 or more previous owners. Which only god knows what they did with them.
If slightly midified, transcooler. Shift kit and turning tires with the proper gears an e4od is a good trans.

Be thankful you don't drive a dodge I've swapped more dodge trannys than anything.

The AOD and C6 autos will work behind most 351W's 302's and 300's. The AOD requires the throttle valve (TV) cable linkage to regulate shifting but it will keep your overdrive. The C6 is a 3-speed auto with shift points regulated by vacuum. The M5OD manual was also an option if you want to pursue adding the clutch mechanisms. Some of the guys here will know at what point Ford stopped using the NP435 4-speed and went to the 5-speed but I don't off the top of my head. Nor do I recall which engines the 435 will work behind. I do know that if you are ambitious enough to hunt one down, you could feasibly put a ZF behind a 300. As I recall this setup was actually available briefly from Ford on the heavier trucks. Now I could be blowing smoke here because ol' grestreak's memory ain't what it was. So if anyone has info to the contrary just chime in and get these fines folks the right info.

v8xploder,

I would tend to agree that many folks simply swap in bigger tires and don't consider the gearing changes that should be made at the same time. I have personally had three E4OD's go south on me and only one with larger than stock tires on the truck. So they have left a bad taste for me.

you might have to deal with driveshaft length differences but to the best of my knowledge, yes. The E4OD is monstrously long.
