hey fellas question for ya if i were to swap a cab from a 82 to a 83 do i just take the vin number off the bad cab and place it in the new one or how do u guys normally do this might be a stupid question but thanks for any answers
Technically that is illegal. If you have the title to the cab you are going to swap on, the easiest way is to title the truck with that.
Another way that might work is to take the cab off, and clean the frame of really good and find the vin on the frame. It might be on the passenger side top frame rail right behind the front wheel. If you can find it and clean it up so you can see it with everything installed, you could accidentally lose the one on the replacement cab.
We had a post like this a couple of weeks ago, and they did it the legal way. They had the title to the truck they were repairing. The had the title to the new cab. They took both to the dmv with proof they owned both, and I am a little fuzzy on the details of what happened after that.
To be legal you have to have the title of both vehicles, (or at least a clear title to both vehicles, IE the title of the truck you got the cab from is reported to DMV as salvage etc..) and register the truck to the vin that is on the frame.
Then you can replace the vin number on the cab legally, in california the state will issue you a new vin sticker that you place on the new cab.
