My 99 Exped (70k miles) with 3:31 limited slip rear end has begun to exhibit a slight "clunking" noise from the rear end when in parking lots, etc., at idle power between 2 and 10 mph. When it does this, it will almost bring the truck to a stop and feels as if you have driven over a joint in a roadway. It does not happen (or we can't feel it if it does) when we accelerate under power.
I had the rear diff serviced (with the synthetic) but the problem remained...any suggestions?
I had what felt like a rear diff bind on my 1999 non-limited slip Expedition. Same symptoms, except for an absence of noise. After four visits to my dealer, the problem was traced to water-contaminated transfer case fluid that caused a partial activation of 4HI. Multiple fluid drain/fills cured this for me about 25,000 miles ago. BTW, I don't take my X swimming, so it could be a possible cause in your case.
I'm still having trouble with my truck and the sound from the rear end. I've cruised the TSB webpages and seen several which talked about clunking sounds during ' tip-in'. Anyone know what 'tip-in' is?
I took my truck to the dealer (service advisor couldn't explain tip-in), they pulled the driveshaft and said the U-joints were fine and they suspected the noise was coming from the transmission, not the rear diff/u joints. They suspect that the tranny probably needs a new 'anti-clunk' spring! However, to find out they want $600 to drop the tranny and continue troubleshooting...with a total estimated cost $1500.
I checked with a couple of transmission shops, they've never heard of a 'anti-clunk' spring and would do a complete rebuild for under $800 (minus the torque converter if required).
Anyone heard of an 'anti-clunk' spring? I don't trust the dealer on this one? Any suggestions out there for me?
Had this problem with my '99 XLT 4x4. Dealer gave me the run around about this but a few phone calls got a factory service engineer to come out and road test it. Turns out it was the clutch packs in the rear end that will need to be replaced TSB about this problem.....this problem fealt as if a cv joint was going to be ripped outta the truck when turning at slow speeds like turning from a dead stop.....this problem can be checked by pulling the fuse for the a4wd and roadtesting it to eliminate transfer case/front differential/cv joints from the mix....
