My 01 F150. I was putting leveling spacers under the front springs yesterday when I noticed something. The abs sensors that bolt into the backing plate (or spindle, I can't remember exactly at the moment) were zip-tied back out of the way. Why would that have been done? Is there a typical issue with these abs systems that this might have bipassed or what? I have no idea, but it struck me as odd that they would have been disabled.
A problem with the system may have lead the previous owner to disconnect it. Does the front rotors have the tone ring on them for ABS?
If you want to know whats up with the system get a scanner on it that reads ABS cause they may have disconnected the dash bulb also.
I'm sure they did because I haven't seen it on. I think they took the airbag light out also because they were blown and I guess there's a light there too, never seen it though. Truck is coming along, got it for a song. They guy drove it into an irrigation ditch and hit the culvert. Bent the bumper way jacked up, rolled it on the pass side and popped the airbags. Got it for 2k with 130k miles. I did the bodywork, replaved the bumper and replaced the pass airbag. I was going to just flip it and make a few bucks, but I really like it. Just put polk speakers in it and a coil spring leveler puck kit in the front. Looks good now and drives really nice. I'm going to make it look outlaw. Flat black, 2tone w/ bedliner and tough mudder tires. It'll be fun for a while. still puzzled with the abs thing though. Brakes work great, but they do lock up when I stand on them.
sounds to me like it had/has a bad sensor or something. idk why they would dismantle the system like that though..... i had a problem on my ranger where the abs would act like you were stopping on ice even if you were stopping on dry pavement. as you can guess this is really dangerous. so i just popped the fuse box and pulled the abs fuse. yes it let it lock up now and then, but it was much safer than before. it sounds to me like the previous owner of your truck may have had a similar problem with a slightly more extreme solution than what i had.
