i am looking at getting an f250 with the 6.0 powerstroke in i have heard good and bad things about this motor with head gaskets i was wondering if i could get some input from some guys who have had one for awhile if they like them and if any problems thanks for help
What year is the truck, I know that there were numerous problems with the early model runs (03-04) which I think were mostly resolved with the later runs starting in 05. I drive a 7.3L so I don't know first hand. I only know from what I have read here. But just because it is an earlier year doesn't nesc. mean its bad, have an OASIS report pulled at a dealer and see if it has been in the shop for numerous powertrain issues, if so, I would shy away from it.
I currently have an 05 with only 63k on it. Purchased it brand new and purposely waited till 05 to get it. Best truck I've owned thus far. No problems whatsoever, just maintained it well over the years.Towed and plowed plenty with it. I myself would probably stay away from the earlier ones. I really hope my 6.7 is as good to me. Given the chance I'd buy another without a doubt.
With a 133k on it I would think it would be ok, depending on the owner history. The lots around here are littered with 6.0's with 101-105k miles on them, which tells me they were probably in the shop quite a bit and the owner traded it in as soon as the warranty ran out. Run the oasis report on it to see what kind of work has been done to it and also see how many previous owners it had and how long they had it. If it had one owner for 100k miles and then 3-4 from 100k to 133k, then I would keep looking.
I had an 05 that went through $18,000 in engine and trans repairs in 3 years. All before 80,000 miles. I traded it at 91K before it was out of warranty for a V10.

OUCH!!!! Really.. Did you have this thing chipped or something? What went wrong?? Man I've never heard that of an 05 and up stock 6.0
Our '05 easily had $10K before 60K miles everything from a bad turbo, bad set of injectors, oil cooler and more I am forgetting. We also dumped it before the warranty was out and bought a V10.
Ours had absolutely no problems until 150k when a bully dog downloader was put on it. In stock form the problem isn't so much the headgasket. The have to know how to drive this motor and you have to maintain it very very well. Many issues derive from the egr system either from excessive idling or poor maintenance. With a little bit of knowledge and a few upgrades the motor can be made nearly bulletproof.
Edit: Also, transmission issues are pretty rare for the torqshift transmission mated to the 6.0l. Most people here praise it.

Reason: Adding
I bought an 06 F 350 SRW with the 6.0, 4 WD, Lariat, longbed, crew cab. Paid $18,000 but it had 174,000 miles. It was in great shape, two owner, and Oasis revealed some injector replacements but nothing major. I have had it for 6 months. It really is a great driving truck, far better than my old '96 F250 powerstroke. I had the same fears as you about this engine (and still do) but so far, so good. Personally, I would be afraid to modify it, so I am keeping mine stock and plan regular maintenance. I probably will only put 8,000 miles a year on it, but I try to drive it several times weekly and get it up to highway speed
I have an 07 F350 6.0 with about 66k on it now. Never had any trouble with it at all. I plow snow heavily with it, and tow a lot, and its been a great truck. That being said, the mileage sucks..... if I don't tow at all for a whole tank, I MIGHT see 12.5 mpg out of a tank in the summer. Truck is 100% stock since the day I bought it new. Most likely average for a tank of fuel is about 11- 11.5.
Having said all that, I never really did trust that 6.0, and I just traded it yesterday on a 2010 with a V-10. Truck will be here next week. I just couldn't justify $7,800.00 for the 6.4 when honestly the V10 will probably get the same mileage and do the same work just fine..... for a whole lot less $$. I did some calculating and based on current fuel prices in my area and the amount of mileage I drive, I calculated if the V-10 were to get 3 mpg LESS than my 6.0, (which I think it will do better than that) it would take me almost 7 years or approx 140k miles to break even....and this doesn't even factor in the additional maintenance costs associated with a diesel. Hope I don't regret my decisoin!!!
i have also heard that the thing that kills this motor is heat from that egr i am a heavy duty truck mechanic and i can see that we got egr issues a lot even with these big trucks so i was told get a bigger exhaust to get rid og the cat so there is not as much back preesure and gets the heat out better and an egr delete kit and it will help a lot with dropping the temp in these motors amking them almost bullet proof
I don't doubt you guys.... there's a lot of people who claim good mileage. I just never saw it. EVER. Best my 6.0 ever saw was 13.5 on a long interstate trip. Again, truck is 100% stock, and I don't drive like an idiot. So IDK
