A few years back I purchased a 1979 regular cab f-100 because I was in need of a truck. Since then I have purchased a new truck (Ford I might add) and the '79 has been parked for about a year. I am starting to get some motivation to make fixing up the truck a project that my dad and I can work on in our free time.
The truck has the mod 351 engine that still runs but will need some carb work done. However the body has quite a bit of rust and I will need to replace body parts. Where is a good place to start my search for exterior panels and truck boxes. I might add that I live in canada.
Also, I am thinking that because the engine runs, my first priority is to complete the body work and and then if need be at a later date I can drop a different engine in.
What are your guys thoughts? Am I on the right track? Do you have any advice to pass on?
i would suggest the same thing as above, find a parts truck or a bed and slowly fix it up. i looked for well over a year and a half to find a parts truck with good sheet metal.
good luck and post some pics
how bad is your rust?what do you need to replace?
I assume the box is rusty and rattled as most of them in this country are,how is the cab?
is the frame good, thats probably the first thing I look at when starting any kind of project truck, not much point in dropping a bunch of time and dollars into a truck that has a rusty frame.
there is a place in ontario that has alot of really good parts for the 1973-79 ford trucks at reasonable prices.
the rust on the box is what I consider pretty bad above the wheel wells. The frame seems to be good. The cab does not have any rust holes, and the front right fender is a dinged up from a deer.
I had made a typo in the original post. the truck is an F-150 and not the F-100.
northeaster79 do you know the name of the place in ontario?
